GEM Road Safety Charity Awards £33,500 In Grants To Enhance Road Safety Initiatives
The GEM Road Safety Charity has recently allocated £33,500 across five projects in its latest funding round. Beneficiaries include the Devon Air Ambulance, Gloucestershire Older Persons Association, and the Queen Elizabeth Foundation. Additionally, two initiatives by FirstCar have received grants. These projects were chosen from 17 proposals for their innovative approaches to improving road safety.
Devon Air Ambulance Trust received £4,500 to study injury patterns among road users. Their project aims to identify potentially survivable injuries through expert analysis. The findings will lead to recommendations for enhancing road safety and trauma care systems.

The Gloucestershire Older Persons Association (GOPA) was granted £10,000. This funding supports the first stage of revamping and relaunching the Older Drivers Forum. This initiative is part of a four-stage development plan aimed at improving safety for older drivers.
FirstCar's TikTok channel, which educates young drivers on road safety, received £2,500. Another £6,500 was awarded to The Honest Truth, a FirstCar initiative focused on developing coaching skills for driving instructors.
The Queen Elizabeth Foundation was awarded £10,000 to establish a driving theory test classroom. This facility will accommodate groups of 10 disabled students at a time, offering both in-person and remote learning options. The Foundation assists nearly 10,000 disabled individuals annually in achieving greater independence.
Laura Ward, chair of the Charity, expressed satisfaction with the selected projects: "We are pleased to congratulate the five successful applicants who have secured funding from the GEM Road Safety Charity. Out of 17 exceptional proposals, these projects stood out for their innovative approaches to enhancing road safety."
Previous Funding Successes
Since its inception in 1985, the Charity has supported numerous initiatives aimed at reducing road fatalities and serious injuries in the UK. Recent grants include one to the National Young Rider Forum for creating videos that address gaps in Highway Code knowledge and road traffic law understanding among inexperienced motorised road users.
Another grant went to Eye Health UK for producing a guide on vision and driving. This guide covers legal eyesight standards and offers tips on adapting driving behaviour to manage vision deficiencies.
A new funding window is scheduled to open in Autumn 2025. Details about applying for grants can be found at roadsafety.org.uk.
The GEM Motoring Assist organisation continues its mission of enhancing road safety through various initiatives since its establishment in 1932. It provides comprehensive roadside assistance services and promotes accident prevention measures across the UK.
