Five Million Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans Mark Three Decades Of Innovation And Quality
The five-millionth Sprinter van, an all-electric eSprinter, was delivered to FedEx. This significant vehicle was assembled at Mercedes-Benz Vans' Charleston plant. The Sprinter, known for its quality and versatility, marks 30 years in the industry. This milestone highlights the enduring success of the Sprinter and Charleston's vital role in Mercedes-Benz's global manufacturing network.
FedEx, a major global logistics provider, received the landmark vehicle. The eSprinter will join FedEx's U.S. fleet, supporting sustainable last-mile delivery across four states. FedEx is one of Mercedes-Benz Vans' largest customers worldwide, using both Sprinter and eSprinter models for various delivery services across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America.
Established in 2006, the Charleston facility is Mercedes-Benz Vans' only plant in North America. In 2018, it underwent a major expansion to accommodate the third generation of the Sprinter. This upgrade included a new body shop and paint shop and extended the assembly area to meet rising demand for these vehicles in North America.
The Charleston plant now employs over 1,600 people and features advanced systems like driverless transport and digital training tools. A $50 million investment in 2024 will support the launch of the new eSprinter at this site. This investment marks another step in Mercedes-Benz Vans' commitment to innovation and growth.
Since its debut in 1995, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has set new standards in the light commercial vehicle sector. It replaced the Mercedes TN (T1) series with advanced safety features like ABS brakes and ESP (Electronic Stability Program). The Sprinter offered better fuel efficiency and a range of powerful yet economical engines.
The second-generation model launched in 2006 with increased cargo capacity and more spacious cabins. It became popular across industries from delivery services to camper-van conversions. In North America, it was marketed under different badges like Dodge and Freightliner.
Global Impact
The third generation introduced in 2018 brought state-of-the-art tech features such as connectivity and digital services. The Sprinter transformed into more than just a van; it became a mobile office with an MBUX multimedia system and advanced telematics.
Today, over 1,000 different versions can be configured from various bodies, chassis, drive concepts, tonnages, and equipment details alone. The current generation offers diverse drivetrains including front-wheel drive with two transmission types.
