Ferrari 296 Speciale A Sets New Benchmark For Open-Air Driving Thrills With Hybrid Powertrain
The Ferrari 296 Speciale A, a new version of the 296 GTS, was recently introduced. This model sets a new standard for driving excitement while maintaining the allure of open-air motoring. The hybrid powertrain produces an impressive 880 cv. With Ferrari's RHT system, the driving experience is enhanced for both driver and passenger.
Weight reduction, a unique suspension setup, and an extra boost strategy increase driver engagement. The 296 Speciale A joins a prestigious line of Ferrari spiders, including the Scuderia Spider 16M and 458 Speciale A. It aims to be the benchmark in open-top driving thrills.
The car features a mid-rear engine plug-in hybrid architecture with a V6 twin-turbo engine and electric motor. This setup delivers a combined output of 880 hp, surpassing the 296 GTS by 50 hp. The internal combustion engine draws from motorsport expertise with titanium connecting rods and reinforced pistons.
The V6 engine produces 700 cv, which is 37 more than its predecessor. The electric motor now offers an additional boost mode, delivering up to 180 cv. This power increase allows for faster gear shifts and improved driver engagement through an eight-speed DCT transmission.
The car generates 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h with the roof up—20% more than the 296 GTS. Innovations like an aero damper in the front bonnet and vertical fins on the rear bumper enhance downforce. The active rear spoiler is managed by a new actuator control strategy for better stability.
Weight-saving measures include carbon fibre body parts and titanium engine components, reducing overall weight by 50 kg compared to the 296 GTS. This results in a weight/power ratio of just 1.69 kg/cv, setting a record for rear-wheel-drive Ferrari berlinetta spiders.
Vehicle Dynamics
The suspension setup has been fine-tuned to ensure predictable behaviour at high speeds. The ABS Evo dynamic control system enhances braking precision across various surfaces. Revised spring and damper settings lower maximum roll angle by 13%, improving cornering performance.
The car rides 5 mm lower than the previous model, further enhancing its dynamic capabilities. Multimatic adjustable shock absorbers derived from the 296 GT3 contribute to weight reduction while optimising damping behaviour for both track and road use.
Interior and Style
The interior design follows Ferrari's latest philosophy with simplified elements to save weight. Carbon fibre and Alcantara are extensively used throughout the cabin for a race-focused feel. A specific door panel made from carbon fibre adds to this minimalist design approach.
The centre tunnel features carbon fibre construction with controls set into it, including the iconic 'shift gate' element inspired by classic Ferraris. This design highlights contemporary sportiness while maintaining traditional Ferrari aesthetics.
Advanced Technology
The hybrid system includes a dual-rotor electric motor situated between the V6 engine and gearbox, offering full-electric driving mode with a range of up to 25 km. The eManettino on the steering wheel allows selection between different modes: eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify.
