FASTag Annual Pass Launched In India: Simplifying Highway Travel Across India

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has unveiled the FASTag annual pass. Starting 15 August 2025, motorists can purchase this pass for Rs 3,000. This initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and enhance highway travel by allowing seamless toll payments through a single transaction.

The FASTag annual pass is designed to offer uninterrupted highway travel across India for a year. It becomes effective on 15 August and is valid for either one year from activation or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first. This pass is specifically for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans.

FASTag Annual Pass Activation

To activate the FASTag annual pass, users will need to access a dedicated link available soon on the Rajmarg Yatra App and official websites of NHAI and MoRTH. This link will facilitate both activation and renewal processes.

The introduction of the FASTag annual pass aims to reduce waiting times at toll plazas and alleviate traffic congestion. It also addresses concerns about toll plazas within a 60 km range by simplifying toll payments into a single affordable transaction.

Benefits of the New Policy

This policy introduces two payment models for highway usage. The first model is an annual pass costing Rs 3,000 per year, providing unlimited access to toll roads. The second model charges Rs 50 per 100 kilometres travelled, suitable for those who use highways less frequently.

FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to facilitate toll payments while vehicles are in motion. The device is placed on the vehicle's windscreen like a sticker. As vehicles approach a toll plaza, the RFID tag allows direct payment from the linked account.

Mandatory Use of FASTag

Since 1 January 2021, all four-wheelers and above must have FASTag. Vehicles without it are required to pay double the toll tax. Currently, FASTag operates at over 700 toll plazas nationwide, including all national highways and more than 100 state highway toll plazas.

Nitin Gadkari stated that "This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction." The central government's update aims to deliver faster and smoother travel experiences for millions of private vehicle owners.
