Electric Vehicles Show Nearly 30% Lower Servicing Costs Compared To Petrol And Diesel Cars In 2025
Electric vehicles (EVs) are proving to be significantly more economical to maintain than petrol, diesel, or hybrid cars. According to The Car Expert, servicing an EV over five years is nearly 30% cheaper. This insight comes as EV sales have surged by 35% in 2025, now representing over 20% of new car registrations.
The analysis, powered by Clear Vehicle Data, examined official manufacturer servicing costs for over 600 new and near-new cars in the UK. It revealed that EVs are cheaper to service in 95% of like-for-like model comparisons. This often results in savings of hundreds of pounds annually for drivers.
Despite a general increase in servicing costs across the automotive industry, EVs continue to offer long-term maintenance savings compared to petrol cars. The simplicity of EV drivetrains contributes to these savings. With fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes, maintenance costs are reduced.
Specific models highlight these savings further. For instance, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric is 31% cheaper to service than its petrol counterpart over three years and 32% cheaper from years three to five. Similarly, the Fiat 500e offers a 34% saving initially and 31% later on compared to its petrol version.
The all-electric MINI Countryman also shows significant savings. Its maintenance costs are reduced by 18% in the first three years and by 22% from years three to five. These examples illustrate the financial benefits of choosing electric models.

For fleet managers and high-mileage drivers, these long-term savings are particularly impactful. The Car Expert collaborates with Clear Vehicle Data, whose insights are trusted by major leasing and fleet management companies in the UK.
Tim Hudson from Clear Vehicle Data stated: "Our data shows a clear trend: electric vehicles consistently cost less to maintain." He emphasised that with more EV options available now, switching makes financial sense due to lower running costs.
