Delhi's Electric Vehicle Initiative Drives Adoption With New Buses & Infrastructure Improvements
The global demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) is on the rise, and India is no exception. The central government is actively promoting EVs due to their eco-friendly and quiet nature. To support this, subsidies are being offered to both manufacturers and consumers. Efforts are also underway to integrate EVs into public transport systems across the country, with a particular focus on Delhi.
In Delhi, the state government has launched the 'Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative' (DEVI) to boost EV adoption. This initiative has introduced various types of EVs for different uses in the city. As part of this effort, approximately 400 electric buses have been added to the Delhi State Transport Corporation's fleet, bringing the total number of electric buses in Delhi to over 2,000.

The recent addition of 400 electric buses was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Central Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Among these, around 120 buses were produced by JBM Group. With these new additions, JBM Group now operates over 650 electric buses under the Delhi government's initiative. A significant feature of these buses is the Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS).
This ITMS facilitates centralized management and real-time tracking of all electric buses in Delhi. The system updates bus locations every second. Additionally, these new buses are equipped with CCTV cameras for enhanced security. For passenger safety and convenience, stop request buttons have been installed inside the buses.

To ensure safety, these electric buses come with systems that alert in case of sparks or faults. Continuous monitoring systems are in place to detect any issues within the vehicles. The dashboard design aims to reduce driver distractions while providing adequate control.
The Chief Minister of Delhi has announced plans to add another 2,080 electric buses by the end of 2025. This expansion aligns with efforts to make EV travel more common and address current challenges in charging infrastructure.
DriveSpark Thinks
To encourage the use of EVs for personal transportation, governments need to first introduce them into public transport. This is because it will make EV travel commonplace. Additionally, it will address the current shortcomings in EV charging infrastructure.
