Electric Car Sales In India Decline In February 2025 Despite Tata Motors' Leadership
Electric cars have seen a surge in popularity in India, with manufacturers introducing new models to meet demand. Despite this, February 2025 saw a notable drop in sales. While electric two-wheelers are gaining traction, car sales are lagging. Typically, around 10,000 electric cars are sold monthly, but last month only 8,968 units were sold, marking a decline of 1,000 to 2,000 cars.
Tata Motors maintained its lead in electric car sales last month by selling 3,825 units. However, this was a decrease from the 5,143 units sold in February 2024 and the 5,245 units sold in January 2025. MG Motor followed closely with 3,271 sales. This was an improvement from the 1,096 units sold in February last year but a drop from the 4,470 units sold in January this year.

Hyundai surprisingly took third place by selling 738 electric cars last month. This was a significant improvement as they had not sold even 350 units in February last year or January this year. Mahindra, which usually ranks third, slipped to fourth place with 424 sales last month.
BYD and BMW occupied the fifth and sixth positions with sales of 254 and 219 electric cars respectively. Mercedes-Benz followed in seventh place with 67 sales, while Citroen was eighth with 59 sales. These figures highlight the varied performance among different manufacturers in the electric car market.

In addition to these figures, other brands also contributed to the market. Volvo sold 21 electric cars, Kia sold 19, Audi sold seven, Porsche sold two, and Rolls-Royce managed to sell one unit last month. Despite the overall decline in sales for most companies, Hyundai's increase is likely due to the introduction of their Creta electric car.
DriveSpark Thinks
The Indian market for electric cars is evolving slowly compared to two-wheelers. The recent dip in sales indicates challenges that manufacturers face despite introducing new models. However, Hyundai's recent success suggests that strategic model launches can still capture consumer interest and drive sales.
