E20 Petrol: No Change In Warranty

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) today, which challenges India's E20 fuel policy, stakeholders from the auto component industry, oil companies, and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) recently gathered on a panel to clarify concerns.

The discussion is aimed to address widespread doubts about E20's effect on fuel efficiency, vehicle durability, and warranty protection, while also highlighting the broader benefits of ethanol blending.

Why India Is Moving To E20 Petrol

The government's push for ethanol blending is not just about fuel. According to PS Ravi, Director of the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI), nearly 70 percent of the procurement value of ethanol directly supports farmers. Over the past 3-4 years, investments worth around Rs 40,000 crore have been made in new distilleries and locally manufactured equipment.

Warranty Concerns

One of the biggest consumer concerns has been warranty coverage. Major automakers, however, have assured that existing warranties will remain valid even with E20 usage.

Here's how manufacturers are responding:

Manufacturer compliance and warranty position for E20 fuel
Manufacturer Compliance Warranty
Honda All cars made in India since 1 Jan 2009 are E20 material compatible; fully E20 compliant since Feb 2025. No change in warranty applicability.
Toyota Full E20 compliance since 1 Apr 2023. Warranty remains valid.
JLR Not specified. Warranty remains valid.
Renault Material compliant from Apr 2021 onwards. Based on ARAI study, no serious challenges observed in Renault cars using E20 in E10-compliant and tested vehicles. Warranty remains valid.
Volkswagen Material compliant from Apr 2020 onwards. E20 fuel can be used without affecting durability. Warranty remains valid.
Skoda Material compliant from Apr 2020 onwards. E20 fuel can be used without affecting durability. Warranty remains valid.
Tata Motors Material compliant from Apr 2020 onwards. Warranty remains valid.
Mahindra Material compliant from Apr 2020 onwards. Warranty remains valid.
Hyundai Material compliant from Apr 2020 onwards. Warranty remains valid.
Nissan Material compliant from Apr 2021 onwards. Warranty remains valid.

While this offers reassurance for newer vehicles, ambiguity remains for older models-especially the estimated 75-80 million pre-BS4 motorcycles still on the roads. No long-term study on component wear has been shared publicly.

Mileage Concerns

Ethanol contains less energy than petrol-about 24MJ/L compared to petrol's 34MJ/L. This translates to an estimated 6% drop in energy density with E20, and since E10 was already in use, the government pegs the actual efficiency drop at roughly 2%. However, motorists have reported mileage reductions of up to 20%.

Pricing & Availability

Consumers have questioned why E20, despite its lower price, is not sold at a reduced price. Officials argue that the larger goal is to cut crude oil imports, and claim ethanol production is costlier than crude. Yet, in markets like Brazil and the US, blended fuels are often cheaper at retail.

Another major challenge is distribution. Unlike other countries where multiple blends are offered, India has shifted to E20 petrol as a single grade. Setting up a parallel supply chain nationwide was deemed financially unfeasible, according to Indian Oil Corporation.

DriveSpark Thinks

The panel discussion helped clarify warranty validity and provided some reassurance on efficiency losses. Yet, critical questions remain unanswered: What is the long-term impact on older vehicles? Who bears responsibility if damage occurs? And why are consumers not incentivised to adopt ethanol-blended fuel?

With higher blends like E27 already on the horizon, transparent communication and proactive policy measures will be essential to gain motorists' trust and ensure India's ethanol transition succeeds.
