Dr. Werner Tietz To Lead Volkswagen Group Research And Development Starting July 2025
Dr. Werner Tietz, currently serving as a Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at SEAT S.A., is set to take on an additional role within the Volkswagen Group. Starting 1 July 2025, he will become the Head of Group Research and Development and join the extended Group Executive Board. This move follows Dr. Michael Steiner's decision to step down from this position.
Dr. Michael Steiner, who has been holding dual roles at Porsche AG and Volkswagen Group, will now focus solely on his responsibilities at Porsche. He will be appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG while continuing his work in research and development there. His contributions have been pivotal in advancing the group's technological capabilities.

Dr. Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, praised both executives for their contributions. "With his vision, technical expertise, and more than three decades of experience within the Volkswagen Group, Werner Tietz has played a key role in shaping the innovative strength of brands such as Audi, Porsche, Bentley and SEAT/CUPRA," he stated. Dr. Blume also acknowledged Dr. Steiner's impact on future-oriented mobility solutions.
Dr. Tietz's career with Volkswagen began in 1994 after earning his doctorate in engineering from RWTH Aachen University. He has held various roles at Audi, including overseeing vehicle interiors. In 2011, he moved to Porsche to lead body and interior development for all models before joining SEAT.
The Volkswagen Group is a global leader in automotive manufacturing with its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. It operates 115 production facilities across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. The group employs approximately 680,000 people worldwide and sells vehicles in over 150 countries.
In 2024, Volkswagen delivered nine million vehicles globally compared to 9.2 million in 2023. The group's sales revenue reached EUR 324.7 billion in 2024, slightly up from EUR 322.3 billion in the previous year. However, its operating result decreased from EUR 22.5 billion in 2023 to EUR 19.1 billion in 2024.

Dr. Steiner began his career at Mercedes-Benz before joining Porsche in 2002 where he was responsible for developing the Panamera series among other projects. Since becoming a member of Porsche's Executive Board for Research and Development in 2016, he has significantly contributed to advancements like high-performance electrical architectures.
The Volkswagen Group continues to invest heavily in electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies as part of its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions worldwide.
