Gilbert Yates Dominates Trofeo Pirelli With Double Victory; Peter Hunter Achieves First Win Of 2025

The Ferrari Challenge UK Trofeo Pirelli series continued at Oulton Park, a renowned circuit in Cheshire, England. The event saw the Ferrari 296 Challenge cars racing on the narrow and fast track. James Calado, an official driver for Ferrari 499P, attended as a special advisor to race control. Gilbert Yates excelled in Trofeo Pirelli, winning both races and leading the championship with 67 points.

In Coppa Shell, Mike Dewhirst and Peter Hunter each claimed a victory. Hunter's win marked his first of the season. Dewhirst now leads the championship standings with 62 points, followed closely by Simmerson with 52 points and Hunter with 50 points.

On Friday, May 16th, during Qualifying 1 for Trofeo Pirelli, Yates maintained his top form by clocking the fastest lap at 1:35.159. In Coppa Shell, Paul Simmerson took advantage of optimal track conditions to secure pole position with a time of 1:36.074.

The following day, Saturday, May 17th, Yates continued his impressive performance in Qualifying 2 by posting another fastest lap of 1:34.586 to retain pole position in Trofeo Pirelli. Meanwhile, Hunter achieved pole in Coppa Shell with a time of 1:36.629.

During Race 1 of Trofeo Pirelli, Joseph Dean's early off led to a red flag restart. Pranav Vangala challenged Yates but couldn't overtake him as Yates built a six-second lead. Callum Leathem spun but recovered to pressure Fedor Samorukov in the final laps. Yates secured victory with a dominant drive.

In Coppa Shell Race 1, Simmerson initially led but faced pressure from Dewhirst after clearing traffic. Despite Simmerson's strong defence, Dewhirst overtook him on the penultimate lap at Cascades and held on for victory.

Second Day Races

Race 2 of Trofeo Pirelli saw Dean off again early on. Vangala kept close to Yates throughout but couldn't pass him as Yates maintained his lead despite Vangala's relentless pursuit. A late overshoot by Vangala allowed Yates to clinch his second win of the weekend.

In Coppa Shell Race 2, early contact between Jonathan Satchell and Darren Howell brought out the yellow flag. After the restart, Dewhirst overtook Simmerson while Hunter held his lead firmly against Dewhirst's advances to secure his first season win.

The next round of the Ferrari Challenge UK Trofeo Pirelli series will take place at Brands Hatch GP circuit on June 21-22, 2025.
