Delhi Government Extends Electric Vehicle Policy For Additional 3 Months

In a recent move by the Delhi government, the current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy has been granted an additional three months' extension. This decision is pivotal, allowing the existing policy to remain active until the introduction of the much-anticipated Delhi EV Policy 2.0. This extension ensures a seamless transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options within the capital city.

The extension was officially sanctioned during a cabinet meeting led by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Following the meeting, Delhi's Transport Minister Pankaj Singh made it clear that the government's agenda includes a variety of initiatives aimed at benefiting the city's residents, with a particular focus on enhancing the electric vehicle infrastructure.

Notably, Singh emphasized, "There are many things the government wants to do for its residents, and we will incorporate those in the revised EV policy. However, I want to make it clear that there will be no ban on auto-rickshaws, nor is there any proposal to ban any category of vehicles. The current EV policy is expected to continue for approximately the next three to four months."

The Delhi EV Policy first made its debut in August 2020, marking a significant step by the state government towards combating vehicular pollution through the promotion of electric vehicles. Initially set for a three-year duration, the policy aimed at increasing the adoption of EVs to 25% by 2024. Given its expiration in August 2024, the policy has been extended multiple times to ensure its goals are met while the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is being finalized.

Looking forward, the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is being developed with ambitious objectives to further escalate the adoption of electric vehicles and significantly cut down pollution levels. The draft for the new policy encompasses a wide range of vehicle categories including two-wheelers, buses, three-wheelers, and goods carriers, proposing a shift towards electric mobility. Incentives are a key component of the policy, with plans to offer women riders a subsidy of up to Rs 36,000 for electric two-wheeler purchases. Additionally, a purchase incentive of Rs 10,000/kWh is proposed for electric two-wheelers, subject to a maximum of Rs 30,000 per vehicle.

The aspirations of the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 extend beyond just increasing the number of electric vehicles on the road. It aims to create up to 20,000 jobs throughout its implementation phase and establish a robust infrastructure for EVs, including battery collection centers and a comprehensive network of charging and swappable battery stations. This initiative is poised to make a significant impact on Delhi's air quality by replacing a substantial number of vehicles powered by fossil fuels with electric alternatives.

As anticipation grows for the formal notification of the Delhi EV Policy 2.0, following Cabinet approval, the extension of the current EV policy underscores the government's commitment to a greener, more sustainable future. This move not only reinforces the capital's dedication to improving air quality but also highlights the progressive steps being taken to embrace and facilitate the transition towards electric mobility.
