Dakar 2025 Stage 5 Results: KTM's Luciano Benavides & Toyota's Seth Quintero Win As Penalties Play Havoc
Stage 5 of the 47th edition of the Dakar rally saw competitors head from Alula to Hail, covering a total of 492km, including a 428km special stage. KTM's Luciano Benavides and Toyota's Seth Quintero inherited the stage wins today after the fastest competitors were hit with big penalties.
Dakar 2025 Stage 5 Results - Bikes
KTM's Argentinian rider Luciano Benavides claimed his first win at Dakar since 2023. This was the Argentinian's 4th win at Dakar and he ended the stage in 04:53:00. Benavides inherited the win after the actual fastest rider on the Saudi sands today, Adrien Van Beveren, was handed a two-minute penalty for overspeeding. The French Honda rider ended the day 47 seconds behind Benavides.
The final podium spot on offer today was claimed by Hero's Nacho Cornejo. The "Chilean Dragon", finished the special stage in 04:54:31, 01:31 behind Benavides. Fourth place was claimed by the other Hero rider still remaining at the Dakar, defending W2RC Ross Branch.
The Ferrari of the Kalahari finished today's stage three minutes and 20 seconds behind Benavides. Closing the top 5 was defending champion Ricky Brabec, who ended the day 10 seconds behind Branch.
In the overall standings, KTM's Daniel Sanders (who ended the day in 12th after being hit with an 8-minute penalty for speeding), still leads Dakar 2025 in the bikes section. With an overall time of 30:20:15, the Aussie heads into the rest day with a lead of 07:02 over Honda's Toscha Schareina.
Hero's Ross Branch retained his hold over the final podium spot and is currently 17:48 behind Sanders. Fourth place in the overall standings belongs to Adrien Van Beveren (18:31 behind) while Skyler Howes is in 5th place (19:59 behind).
Defending champion Ricky Brabec is in 6th place (21:01 behind) while today's winner Luciano Benavides is in 7th place. Honda's Pablo Quintanilla is in 8th place (32:49 behind) while Hero's Nacho Cornejo is in 9th place (43:50 behind). KTM's Edgar Canet is the fastest Rally 2 rider and is now in 10th place overall (01:01:44 behind).
Dakar 2025 Stage 5 Results - Cars
In the cars category, a scenario familiar to those monitoring the bikes played out as Toyota's Seth Quintero inherited the win. Quintero won the stage with a time of 04:32:53 after the fastest man on four wheels on the Saudi sands today, Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah was hit with a 10-minute penalty and the Dacia driver ended up in 2nd place, one second off the pace.
The final podium spot was claimed by Ford's Mattias Ekstrom who ended the day just 8 seconds off the pace. Toyota's Henk Lategan ended the day in 4th place, 54 seconds off the pace while Overdrive's Yazeed Al Rajhi ended the day in 5th place, 04:17 behind Quintero.
In the overall standings, Toyota's South African driver Henk Lategan leads Dakar 2025's cars category with a time of 28:10:11 as the world's toughest rally heads into the rest day.
Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi is in 2nd place and is 10:17 behind Lategan. Ford's Swedish driver Ekstrom is in 3rd place overall, 20:54 off the pace. Dacia's Nasser Al Attiyah is in 4th overall, 35:00 off the pace (including 16 minutes of penalties).
In 5th place is Toyota's Lucas Moraes, the Brazilian driver is currently 41:55 off the pace. American driver Mitchell Guthrie is in 6th place in his Ford Raptor, 42:44 behind Lategan. Mathieu Serradori is 45:59 off the pace in 7th in his Century Racing Hilux.
In 8th spot is Argentina's Yuan Jalcopani, who is 01:03:17 behind Lategan. In 9th place currently is today's winner Seth Quintero, who sits 01:30:10 off the pace. In the 10th spot is X-Raid JCW's Guerlain Chicherit, who sits 01:38:45 behind Lategan.
