Dakar 2025 Stage 2 Day 2 Results: Hattrick For Daniel Sanders As Al Rajhi Delights Home Fans

The second day of Stage 2 of the 47th edition of the Dakar rally saw competitors start racing again, as the sun rose over the Saudi Arabian sands to complete the 48-hour chrono stage. Competitors covered over 1,000 kilometres of dirt and gravel traps along with sand before finally returning to the town of Bisha.

At the end of the humungous stage, KTM's Daniel Sanders and Overdrive's Yazzed Al Rajhiu had laid claim to the stage wins. This was the third win on the trot for Sanders at Dakar 2025, a feat last achieved by Joan 'Bang Bang' Barreda in 2017, while Al Rajhi claimed his first stage win of this year's rally.

Daniel Sanders started the day as the rider in the lead and by the time he ended the stage, he had opened up a lead of 7 minutes and 37 seconds over Honda's Sam Howes. Sanders finished the chrono stage in 11 hours, 12 minutes and 13 seconds.

American rider Sam Howes was the lead Honda racer after two days of racing, ending stage 2 with a time of 11:19:50, beating teammate Tosha Schareina by just 4 seconds at the finish line. Adrien Van Beveren made it three Hondas in the top 5, ending the day 8 minutes and 45 seconds off the pace after being hit with a 2-minute time penalty.

Hero's Ross Branch rounded off the top 5, ending the stage with a time of 11:22:15, 10 minutes and 2 seconds off the pace set by Sanders. The other Hero rider at Dakar 2025, ended the 48-hour chrono stage with a time of 11:38:22 to claim 12th place. At the time of publishing this article, neither Ashish Raorane nor Jatin Jain, the two remaining Indian riders at Dakar 2025, had completed the stage.

In the overall standings, Daniel Sanders leads Dakar 2025 with a time of 16:10:31. The Aussie rider is 12 minutes and 32 seconds ahead of Honda's Skyler Howes. Hero's Ross Branch is another 4 seconds behind in third place.

Spain's Tosha Schareina is in 4th place on his Honda, 12 minutes and 48 seconds behind Sanders. Honda's Ricky Brabec, the defending Dakar champion from the USA, is in 5th overall, 15 minutes and 09 seconds off the pace set by Sanders. Hero's Nacho Cornejo is currently ranked 9th overall, 46 minutes and 57 seconds behind Sanders.

In the cars category, Saudi driver, Yazzed Al Rajhi laid claim to his first stage win of the 2025 Dakar Rally beating Toyota's Henk Lategan and Dacia's Nasser Al Attiyah to the stage win.

Al Rajhi completed the stage at 10:56:54, 04:16 ahead of South Africa's Henk Lategan and 06:29 ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah. Rajhi was hit with a 2-minute penalty for speeding with Al Alttiyah also dropping 4 minutes for the same error.

Overdrive Racing made it three out of five in the top 5 with Juan Yacopani ending in 4th place and Rokas Baciusca finishing in 5ht place. Dacia's Sebastien Loeb ended the day in 7th place (13:08 behind Lategan) while Mattias Ekstrom was the fastest Ford in 8th place (13:42 behind). Defending champion Carlos Sainz was in 35th place, 01:35:12 off the pace.

Lategan now leads Dakar 2025 with a time of 15:40:30, 4 minutes and 45 seconds ahead of Al Rajhi (who has been hit with 4 minutes of speeding penalties) and 11 minutes and 45 seconds in front of Al Attiyah, who has six minutes of time penalties.

Two-time Dakar winner (on Bikes) Toby Price almost got onto the podium with his co-driver Sam Sunderland (another 2-time Dakar winner on Bikes) but a 2-minute time penalty means that the Aussie/English duo are just 30 seconds behind the Dacia of Al Attiyah.

Luas Moraes is the fastest of the Ford drivers in fifth place (13:16 behind Lategan) while Dacia's Sebastien Loeb (18:56 behind) is in 6th place. Defending champion Carlos Sainz is now in 25th place, 01:30:11 behind Lategan in his Ford Raptor, which he flipped and crashed yesterday.
