Continental Earns Tire Manufacturer Of The Year Award For Sustainable Practices & Innovation
This year, Continental has once again demonstrated its leadership in the tire manufacturing industry by receiving two distinguished awards at the Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence. The company was not only named "Tire Manufacturer of the Year" but also received accolades for its environmental efforts with its Lousado, Portugal plant, which has been operating CO2-neutrally since last year. These awards, considered among the highest in the tire industry, were presented during the Tire Technology Expo held on March 4 in Hanover.
Edwin Goudswaard, Head of Research and Development at Continental Tires, expressed immense pride in the company's double recognition, emphasizing their dedication to sustainable tire development and manufacturing. "We are especially proud to be the only manufacturer to be honored twice at the Tire Technology Awards in an extremely competitive field," he stated. "Both awards highlight our strong commitment to sustainable tire development and manufacturing. In such a highly competitive market, this success demonstrates our innovative prowess and our ability to actively shape the future of the industry."

Continental's Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
With these recent honors, Continental reinforces its position as an industry leader, marking the fourth occasion it has been named "Tire Manufacturer of the Year", the most recent being in 2022. The jury, comprising 27 independent industry experts, praised Continental for its strides towards sustainability. They took note of several projects, including the use of recycled PET bottles in more plants, the expansion of the Rayong, Thailand plant adhering to the highest energy-efficiency standards, and obtaining the international sustainability certification ISCC-PLUS for its facilities in Lousado, Portugal; Puchóv, Slovakia; and Hefei, China. Moreover, the company's efforts in upgrading the Hefei tire plant with advanced automation technology in line with sustainability standards were recognized.
Continental's innovative approach extends to its tire designs, as seen in their development of the UltraContact NXT tire, which won the "Environmental Achievement of the Year – Tire Design" award. This accolade, coupled with the manufacturing category award for the Lousado, Portugal plant's sustainability measures, showcases Continental's leadership in eco-friendly production practices.
Since 2024, the Lousado plant has been pioneering a CO2-neutral production method, utilizing a fully electric steam boiler powered by solar energy and renewable grid sources. This significant change from natural gas to renewable energy sources for steam generation underscores Continental's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, with plans to transition all its tire plants to carbon-neutral processes by 2040.
