Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X And ZR1 Set Record Fastest Laps For American Cars At Nürburgring
The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X and ZR1 achieved record lap times at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, marking a significant milestone for American automotive engineering. With impressive performances from skilled engineers, these vehicles demonstrate the capabilities of General Motors' design and performance.
The Chevrolet Corvette Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X recently made history at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. For the first time, an automaker brought three different cars with three non-professional drivers to record lap times in one visit. This achievement highlights General Motors' engineering prowess and dedication to performance.
Drew Cattell, a vehicle dynamics engineer, drove the electrified all-wheel-drive ZR1X to a 6:49.275 lap time. This is now the fastest lap by a non-professional driver at the Nürburgring. Brian Wallace set a 6:50.763 time in the 1,064-horsepower ZR1. Meanwhile, Aaron Link managed a 7:11.826 lap in the 670-horsepower Corvette Z06.
The Corvettes used for these laps were U.S. production-spec vehicles with safety modifications recommended by the track. These included a roll hoop, full containment race seat, fire extinguisher, and six-point safety harness. The cars competed in the Prototype/Pre-Production category since they are not sold in Europe.
Mark Reuss, GM President, stated, "No auto manufacturer has done a Nürburgring lap attempt like this before." He emphasized that GM engineers and vehicles have shown their capabilities from development through production at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The documentary "Homegrown Speed: A Corvette Story" captures this journey from GM's Milford Proving Ground to Germany.
The film features key figures like Reuss, Ken Morris, Senior Vice President of Product Programs, Safety, Integration and Motorsports; and Tony Roma, Corvette Executive Chief Engineer. It showcases the precision involved in achieving these lap times with three different Corvette variants.
Experienced Drivers
Link, Wallace, and Cattell are seasoned Nürburgring-certified drivers with extensive experience on this challenging track. They have collectively visited Nürburgring 31 times for vehicle development and testing. Their combined expertise spans 36 years working on Performance Cars at GM.
Ken Morris remarked on their achievements: "We’ve created a different kind of relationship between our cars, iconic tracks, and our engineers." He noted that these engineers have become world-class drivers while maintaining their engineering excellence.
The Green Hell
Since 2019, official lap times at Nürburgring have been recorded and published with video proof required from carmakers. The track is known as the Green Hell due to its demanding nature. Below are some of the fastest production cars on this circuit:
