Chance Hymas Achieves Sixth Place Finish At 250SX East Season Opener In Tampa

Honda HRC Progressive faced a tough night at the fifth round of AMA Supercross in Tampa. The 250SX East Region debut saw Chance Hymas return after ACL surgery last September. However, Hunter Lawrence's evening ended early due to a crash in his heat race. Jett Lawrence was also absent as he recovers from knee surgery.

Despite the challenges, Honda had representation in the 450SX main event with Joey Savatgy and Shane McElrath finishing 10th and 13th, respectively. In the 250SX East main event, Hymas started strong, running fourth before a red flag halted proceedings. After the restart, he finished sixth, marking a promising return.

In the heats, Jeremy Hand finished ninth in Heat 1 of 450SX, earning a spot in the main event.

In Heat 2 of 450SX, Shane McElrath and Joey Savatgy secured fourth and sixth places respectively. Hymas earned a direct transfer to the 250SX East main event with a third-place finish in Heat 2. Carson Mumford, Cullin Park, and Henry Miller also qualified through their heats.

Additional Highlights

Lance Kobusch won the LCQ with Luke Neese and Trevor Colip finishing second and third to advance to the main event. Seven out of the 22 riders qualifying for the 250SX East main event were on Honda bikes—two more than any other manufacturer.

Lars Lindstrom, Team Manager for Honda HRC Progressive, expressed mixed feelings about the night. "This racing thing sure does have its ups and downs! Sometimes you need a little luck on your side," he said. He praised Chance Hymas for riding smart without taking unnecessary risks.

Special Moments and Future Plans

A special moment occurred when retired Honda veteran Justin Brayton joined Hymas for a symbolic number exchange captured by FLY Racing. Brayton passed his #10 number to Hymas as he embarks on his AMA Supercross journey.

The team now looks forward to round six of AMA Supercross in Detroit, Michigan. This event will not include FanFest or dealer activation activities.

Quotes from Riders

Hunter Lawrence reflected on his brief night: "What started out as a great night in Tampa turned into a very short night! At the end of lap 1 in my heat race, I landed on some tough blocks and banged myself up really nicely; now I'm just focusing on getting back to 100%."

Chance Hymas shared his thoughts: "The first round in Tampa was a pretty good day for me overall... Each qualifying session got better... I just need some more laps under me, but overall, a solid start to the year."
