Car Retail Sales Decline Marginally In July 2025: Maruti Suzuki Leads, Hyundai Pips Mahindra

In July 2025, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) reported a decline in retail sales numbers across various vehicle segments.

Overall sales fell by 4.31% compared to July 2024, with a month-on-month decrease of 1.98%. FADA claims that this downturn, after three months of growth, was influenced by factors like heatwaves and excessive rainfall.

In July, 328,613 cars and utility vehicles were sold in India at retail. Passenger vehicle sales (retail) experienced a slight year-on-year drop of 0.81%, although they rose by 10.38% compared to June 2025.

Car Sales Performance in July 2025

Maruti Suzuki maintained its position as the top seller in July 2025, with retail sales reaching 129,164 units, representing a market share of 39.31%. Despite this achievement, the company experienced a volume decline of 3,262 units compared to July 2024's sales figures.

Hyundai's sales decreased to 43,009 units from the previous year's figure of 44,271 units but managed to surpass Mahindra by selling an additional 820 units. Mahindra's retail sales increased significantly to reach 42,207 units in July 2025 compared to the previous year's total of 39,823 units.

Tata Motors faced a sharp decline in sales, dropping to 40,486 units from last year's figure of 44,621 units. This decrease reduced their market share from 13.47% to 12.32%. On the other hand, Toyota saw an increase in sales to reach 25,370 units compared to last year's total of 22,821 units. Kia's sales also improved slightly to reach 19,494 units from the previous year's figure of 19,434 units.

Skoda experienced significant growth with sales rising to 8,018 units in July compared to last year's figure of 6,527. JSW MG Motor India, also saw sales increase, from 4,114 vehicles sold in July 2024 to 6,033 vehicles sold this past month.

Honda Cars experienced a sharp decline in their retail figures, dropping to 4,431 vehicles sold compared to 5,035 vehicles in July 2024. Renault and Nissan both suffered declines, resulting in reduced market shares. Renault sold only 2,292 vehicles, while Nissan sold only 1,500 units.

Force Motors' performance dipped significantly with only 729 vehicles sold compared to 920 in the same month in 2024. Citroen/Jeep, however, managed stronger performances, selling 512 cars last month.

The luxury car segment saw positive trends with both Mercedes-Benz and BMW India reporting higher retail sales in July. Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 1,306 vehicles last month compared to 1,268 vehicles in July last year.

BMW also showed improvement with retail figures reaching 1,301 vehicles compared to 1,164 vehicles sold during the same period last year. The introduction of the new BMW model contributed positively towards these numbers. Jaguar Land Rover witnessed declining numbers, falling to 478 vehicles sold.

The remaining brands collectively added 1,810 units to the sales total, which was a rather significant decline compared against the 2,497 vehicles sold in July 2024.
