Car Retail Sales Surge in January 2025 As Maruti Suzuki Continues To Dominate
In January 2025, the Indian automotive industry witnessed a notable uptick in car retail sales, showcasing a year-on-year growth of 15.53% and a month-on-month increase of 58.77%. This surge in sales is attributed to a mix of factors including the advent of the New Year, the introduction of new models, substantial discounts, and attractive financial offers for buyers.
The uptick in sales is as per data collected by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) and has been seen across other segments of the automotive sector, with passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles all reporting gains, contributing to an overall retail sales growth of 6.6%.
Urban markets played a significant role in this growth, with their demand accounting for a 61.8% share of the sales, while rural areas saw an 18.57% increase.

Maruti Suzuki led the sales charts, selling 2,11,074 units in January 2025, up from 1,75,489 units the year before. Hyundai followed, despite a slight dip in market share, with sales increasing to 59,858 units from 52,906 units the year before. Interestingly, while most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) experienced growth, Tata Motors, Honda, and Nissan Motor were exceptions, facing varied challenges.
Tata Motors saw a slight decrease in sales, which dropped marginally by 220 units from January 2024, while its market share reduced to 11.57%. Mahindra, on the other hand, showcased robust growth, selling 51,914 units compared to 43,147 units in the same period the previous year.
