Bugatti Tourbillon Unveils Innovative Hybrid Powertrain Engineering For Enhanced Performance
The Bugatti 'A New Era' documentary series continues with Episode 08, showcasing the Tourbillon's advanced hybrid powertrain. This episode, available on Bugatti's YouTube channel, highlights the fusion of electric technology with a naturally aspirated V16 engine. This innovative approach redefines hyper sports car performance by using electric motors to enhance rather than replace traditional combustion engines.
The Tourbillon's powertrain system is a technological marvel. It includes an 8.3-liter V16 engine, an eight-speed double-clutch transmission with torque-vectoring differential, and a 250-kilowatt electric motor capable of reaching 24,000 rpm. Remarkably, this entire assembly weighs just 430 kilograms, matching the weight of the Chiron's engine alone.
The integration of electric and combustion technologies in the Tourbillon is seamless. The front axle features two independent electric motors and dual inverters within a single unit. Combined with the battery pack, this hybrid system enhances capability without compromising design or weight.
Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, stated: "The electric powertrain, being very high tech, very high performance, is actually enabling this very emotional combustion engine. That's possible only because we have such a tight integration between the electric and hybrid powertrain with the combustion engine."
The Tourbillon incorporates several engineering innovations. Its 3D-printed suspension components are topologically optimized and 45% lighter than previous models. This meticulous process ensures superior performance while maintaining a lightweight structure.
Electric motors in the Tourbillon offer instant response where traditional engines require multiple downshifts for peak performance. "Where the combustion engine isn’t able to deliver its full power, the electric motor can with the roar of a V16 naturally aspirated engine," said Mate Rimac.
Battery Technology and Design
The Tourbillon features a groundbreaking 25kWh T-shaped battery pack with over 1,500 cells and advanced oil cooling technology. Integrated into the chassis structure rather than simply installed within it, this design optimizes weight distribution and structural rigidity while enabling an electric range exceeding 60km.
This clever engineering reduces both weight and footprint. The Tourbillon maintains its elegant silhouette despite accommodating a longer V16 engine, dual front electric motors, enhanced cooling systems, and increased luggage space.
Performance Enhancements
The multifunctional nature of the Tourbillon's electric motors adds sophistication. Operating at 800 volts, they serve as starter motors, generators, and performance enhancers while eliminating traditional starting systems. They also allow battery charging from the engine during operation.
Mate Rimac expressed pride in their achievement: "We haven't simply added electric motors to a combustion engine; we've created a harmonious synthesis that brings out the best qualities of both worlds."
This episode underscores Bugatti's commitment to innovation without compromise. By integrating cutting-edge technology with traditional engineering excellence, Bugatti has crafted a hyper sports car that excels in performance while maintaining elegance and efficiency.
