Bugatti's Enduring Legacy In Horology: Celebrating Innovation And Craftsmanship
For over a century, Bugatti has been synonymous with technical brilliance and artistry. This legacy extends beyond cars to the world of watchmaking. Since 1925, Bugatti's designs have inspired luxurious timepieces. The connection began when Swiss watchmaker Mido saw parallels in Bugatti's dedication to performance and design, leading to a collection that mirrored Bugatti's aesthetics.
The collaboration between Bugatti and Mido resulted in watches that were as exclusive as Bugatti's vehicles. Less than 100 pieces were crafted, featuring a gold case shaped like the iconic horseshoe grille. These watches were often gifted to Ettore Bugatti’s top drivers and mechanics, symbolising a blend of elegance and functionality.
In 1932, Ettore Bugatti commissioned Breguet to create clocks for the Type 41 Royale. These clocks matched the car's grandeur with their scale and elegance. Breguet crafted nine chronographs with tachometer functions for these luxurious automobiles, showcasing their expertise since 1775.
The Breguet dashboard clock was made from chrome-plated brass and featured an eight-day power reserve. Its cream dial bore the words ‘Spécial pour Bugatti’ alongside Breguet’s signature pomme hands. This collaboration highlighted both brands' commitment to precision and refinement.
Fast forward to the early 2000s, Bugatti sought artisans who could craft timepieces as revolutionary as its Veyron hyper sports car. Michel Parmigiani’s workshop was chosen for this task, resulting in the creation of the groundbreaking Bugatti Type 370 timepiece.
The partnership with Parmigiani Fleurier led to a decade-long collaboration producing unique editions celebrating the Veyron models. The Type 370 won ‘Watch of the Year’ in 2006, cementing its status as a coveted horological treasure.
In recent years, Bugatti's connection with horology has strengthened through its collaboration with Jacob & Co., starting in 2019. This partnership has produced timepieces that push boundaries in form and function, mirroring Bugatti’s automotive legacy.
The Twin Turbo Furious Bugatti Edition marked this collaboration’s launch, followed by the Chiron Tourbillon. These watches incorporate elements from Bugatti cars, such as miniature engine blocks paying homage to the W16 engine.
The Future of Horological Innovation
The Jean Bugatti watch captured Ettore’s son’s spirit through one of Jacob & Co.’s most sophisticated chronographs. As innovation surged forward, so did their creations, culminating in the Tourbillon hyper sports car unveiled in June 2024 at Bugatti’s home.
This new era inspired the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon timepiece set for release in 2026. Limited to 250 pieces, it integrates ten design elements from the car itself, including a V16 engine block automaton made from transparent sapphire.
Bugatti continues to explore new horizons in horological innovation with Jacob & Co., planning an exclusive edition of the Tourbillon watch for April in Geneva. This ongoing collaboration celebrates automotive and horological prowess.
From Mido and Breguet's craftsmanship in earlier decades to modern masterpieces by Jacob & Co., Bugatti's watchmaking journey reflects its pursuit of perfection in aesthetics and mechanical excellence. Just like its cars, these watches are works of art honouring performance-engineering passion.
