Bobby Fong Secures Superbike Doubleheader Victory At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
California's Bobby Fong, riding a Yamaha, dominated the MotoAmerica Superbike races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. He secured victories in both events on Sunday, concluding an exhilarating weekend at the MotoAmerica Speedfest in Monterey. Fans were treated to six main events across five classes on the renowned track.
Fong's triumphs came after intense competition with Josh Herrin (Ducati) and Cameron Beaubier (BMW). The trio fought hard over two 20-lap races on the 2.238-mile course, but Fong emerged victorious in both Races 2 and 3. "In the first few laps, I thought it was going to be a long race. I had a few moments in the first few laps battling with these guys, and I thought we were going to be battling for the whole race," said Fong. "I just knew to keep my head down and keep doing my laps. I'm happy to get out of here with two wins and continue our progression."
Josh Herrin's performance over the weekend saw him clinch a win in Race 1 on Saturday and two second-place finishes on Sunday. This propelled him to lead the Superbike point standings by 31 points over Beaubier. Meanwhile, Fong's strong showing places him just 37 points behind Herrin as they head to VIRginia International Raceway from August 1-3.
Blake Davis also had a successful weekend in Motovation Supersport, securing his second win at Monterey. Starting second on the grid for Race 2, Davis overtook pole sitter PJ Jacobsen (Ducati) on lap one and maintained his lead throughout. Cameron Petersen (Ducati) finished second, followed closely by Mathew Scholtz (Yamaha). The top three riders were separated by only .474 seconds at the finish line.
Kyle Wyman (Harley-Davidson) claimed another victory in King of the Baggers after a fierce battle with Hayden Gillim. Mechanical issues for Gillim during their duel allowed Wyman to secure the win in the final laps. Rocco Landers (Harley-Davidson) took second place, while Tyler O'Hara (Indian) finished third. Wyman now leads the championship standings by 76 points over Loris Baz.
In SC-Project Twins Cup, Alessandro Di Mario (Aprilia) achieved his second victory of the weekend. He led from start to finish, commanding a seven-second lead over Hank Vossberg (Aprilia), with Matthew Chapin (Suzuki) taking third place. Di Mario extends his championship advantage over Chapin by 67 points.
Super Hooligan Excitement
The Mission Super Hooligan competition saw James Rispoli (Harley-Davidson) overcome early setbacks to claim his second win of the weekend. Despite an initial collision with teammate Cody Wyman, Rispoli fought back from fifth position to take the lead from Cory West (Harley-Davidson) with an impressive pass on the penultimate lap. Rispoli won by just .255 seconds ahead of West, with Hayden Schultz (Harley-Davidson) finishing third.
The results have shaken up class standings, with West now leading by 22 points over Jake Lewis and Rispoli respectively.
