BMW North America Marks 50 Years With New Headquarters In Woodcliff Lake, NJ

BMW of North America saw rapid growth in its early years, with sales doubling within five years. This was largely due to the success of the first-generation 3 Series, introduced in 1976. As sales increased, so did the workforce. By the early 1980s, BMW NA had outgrown its leased facilities from Hoffman Motors, prompting a need for expansion.

The Montvale headquarters, opened on March 15, 1975, was initially suitable but soon became inadequate. Designed by an unknown architect, it featured mid-century Brutalist architecture. The building's lobby showcased rosewood-paneled walls and a floating staircase. However, it lacked sufficient space and amenities for a growing company.

Tom McGurn, BMW NA’s first public relations director, described the Montvale building as having an unusual design. "The lobby made a huge statement with rosewood paneling," he noted. Despite its grandeur, the building had limited cafeteria space and varied office sizes. Hoffman’s office was particularly extravagant with elevated furniture.

The Montvale facility was designed for a company selling around 13,000 cars annually. A decade later, BMW NA was selling five times that number. By then, about 370 employees were spread across multiple buildings in Montvale. This scattered setup hindered operations and contradicted BMW's push for unified corporate identity among dealers.

Dr. Günther Kramer took over as CEO in 1983 and initiated plans for a new headquarters to address these issues. In 1985, he announced the purchase of 40 acres in Woodcliff Lake for this purpose. The site included an apple orchard and a small lake, providing a picturesque setting for the new facility.

The new headquarters was designed by CUH2A architects of Princeton and featured three offset cubes with white porcelain enamel panels and grey glass windows. This design reflected BMW's desired corporate identity and integrated well into the natural landscape while being visible from the Garden State Parkway.

Modern Facilities at Woodcliff Lake

Construction began in September 1986 and concluded by late 1988. Employees moved into their new offices at 300 Chestnut Ridge Road shortly after completion. The building housed all North American divisional offices under one roof with ample executive corner offices on two levels.

The new facility boasted modern amenities like a video studio, computer server room, barber shop, dry-cleaning service, and an improved cafeteria with diverse food options at subsidised prices. It also featured numerous meeting rooms and an auditorium capable of hosting large gatherings.

Logistical Improvements

A new parts distribution center was established in Mount Olive to resolve trucking issues faced at Montvale due to restricted access routes. Located off Interstate 80 freeway, this center facilitated smoother logistics operations.

Despite relocating headquarters functions to Woodcliff Lake, BMW NA continued leasing the old Montvale building until 2011 for regional operations such as sales and marketing in the northeastern US region.

End of an Era

The "300 Building" served as BMW NA's headquarters for over three decades before being vacated on December 13, 2024. Employees transitioned to a new location at 200 BMW Drive in Woodcliff Lake as part of ongoing expansion efforts by BMW North America LLC.
