BMW Manufacturing Celebrates Award-Winning Vehicles While Investing In A Sustainable Future

Three BMW models produced at the Spartanburg plant have recently been recognised in the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study. The BMW X6 and X7 topped their categories in the IQS, while the X4 and X6 excelled in the APEAL Study. Notably, the BMW X6 emerged as the highest-ranking model in the APEAL Study.

BMW Manufacturing has significantly impacted South Carolina's economy for over 30 years. The Spartanburg plant is the largest BMW production facility globally, employing over 11,000 people to assemble six popular BMW X models. In 2022, nearly 400,000 vehicles were produced in the U.S., with about 63% exported since 2014, totalling over $104 billion in value.

The Spartanburg plant's economic impact is substantial, contributing approximately $26.7 billion annually to South Carolina's economy. According to a study by the University of South Carolina's Darla Moore School of Business, it supports nearly 43,000 jobs statewide and generates $3.1 billion in wages. The plant accounts for 4.8% of all manufacturing jobs in South Carolina.

BMW Manufacturing's presence has attracted a network of suppliers and related industries, enhancing economic growth further. The facility's operations also contribute to tax revenues that benefit local and state governments by supporting infrastructure and community services.

In late 2022, BMW Group announced a $1.7 billion investment in its U.S. operations to prepare for electric vehicle production at Spartanburg. This includes $1 billion for plant upgrades and $700 million for a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff. Plant Woodruff is now operational, with pre-series battery modules being prepared.

By late 2026, Plant Woodruff will begin assembling sixth-generation battery modules for fully electric vehicles at Spartanburg. By 2030, at least six fully electric models will be assembled in the United States.

Commitment to Diverse Drivetrains

"Plant Spartanburg will soon contribute to BMW’s technology openness strategy by assembling three different drivetrains at our site: fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and highly efficient internal combustion engines," said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing.

This strategy allows customers worldwide to choose mobility solutions that best suit their needs while supporting sustainability goals through diverse drivetrain options.

BMW Group's Broader Impact

Since its establishment over three decades ago in South Carolina, BMW has created thousands of sustainable jobs and invested heavily in workforce training and educational initiatives across the state. "Our achievements are a result of the commitment of our associates," stated Dr. Engelhorn.

The company's activities support over 120,000 jobs nationwide and contribute more than $43.3 billion annually to the U.S. economy through various operations across multiple states.
