BMW M Motorsport Faces Challenges In Dramatic Finale At The 24 Hours Of Daytona
BMW M Team RLL and Paul Miller Racing aimed for victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona. However, a dramatic final stage dashed their hopes at the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season opener. Dries Vanthoor, in the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8, collided with another car while fighting for second place, dropping to fourth after repairs. Similarly, Kelvin van der Linde in the #1 BMW M4 GT3 EVO also ended up fourth in the GTD-PRO class.
Despite the setbacks, BMW M Motorsport had a strong weekend at Daytona. The BMW M Hybrid V8 and BMW M4 GT3 EVO showed great potential on the track. Vanthoor led from pole position with a 25-second lead during his initial double-stint. Although yellow flags reduced this advantage, it highlighted the car's strength. Sheldon van der Linde set the fastest lap in 1:35.868 minutes with the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8.
In the GTD-PRO class, Paul Miller Racing took leading roles. The #48 BMW M4 GT3 EVO led into the evening but was hit in a mass collision. Despite repairs by mechanics, it finished twelfth after losing many laps. The sister #1 car moved up from its 13th starting position and fought for victory until an opponent forced Kelvin van der Linde into a spin, resulting in fourth place.
Turner Motorsport performed strongly in the GTD class, finishing fifth with the #96 BMW M4 GT3 EVO. Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, expressed disappointment over not achieving different results at Daytona. He noted that with 50 minutes left, they were contenders for wins across all categories and praised the speed and reliability of their cars.
Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, thanked his team despite mixed results over the weekend. He acknowledged promising starts with Dries Vanthoor on pole (GTP) and Dan Harper third (GTD PRO). Roos emphasized their competitiveness throughout much of the race but lamented missing out on deserved victories.
Driver Reactions
Dries Vanthoor congratulated his brother on winning and expressed disappointment over missing a podium finish despite showing great pace. Sheldon van der Linde described their race ending as disappointing due to a pit stop issue costing them three laps they couldn't recover from.
Kelvin van der Linde felt proud fighting for victory throughout his first race with BMW M Motorsport but regretted narrowly missing out due to losing track position during a pit stop late in the race.
Looking Forward
Max Hesse thanked BMW M Motorsport and Paul Miller Racing for allowing him to start at Daytona for the first time despite being involved in an unavoidable crash that wasn't their fault. Augusto Farfus explained how he intended to support his teammate during hard racing when an unfortunate collision occurred between Corvette and Connor De Phillippi behind him.
Jens Klingmann reflected on Turner Motorsport's fifth-place finish as their best result at Daytona yet expressed frustration over not winning despite being second half an hour before finishing fifth overall due to circumstances beyond control.
The teams are determined to learn from this experience as they prepare for Sebring next time around while maintaining optimism about future successes given how well-prepared they were heading into this eventful weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
