BMW IX3 Prototypes Showcase Electric Range Of Up To 800km And Advanced Charging Features
The upcoming BMW iX3 is set to redefine electric driving with its impressive features. It boasts an electric range of up to 800km (WLTP) and can charge over 350km in just 10 minutes. The vehicle will debut at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, with production starting later this year at BMW's new plant in Debrecen, Hungary.
The BMW Panoramic iDrive system enhances driver orientation by displaying essential information directly in the driver's line of sight. This system combines four key elements: a panoramic vision display, a 3D head-up display, a central display with matrix backlight technology, and a multifunction steering wheel. Together, these features ensure safety and ergonomic efficiency.
The Gen6 powertrain in the BMW iX3 represents a significant leap forward. It offers faster charging capabilities and improved efficiency. The high-voltage battery concept is entirely new, featuring cylindrical cells with 20% more energy density than previous designs. This innovation supports an extended range and rapid charging.
Bidirectional charging functions are another highlight of the BMW iX3. These include Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). V2L allows the car to act as a mobile power source, while V2H reduces costs by using the vehicle as home energy storage. V2G integrates the car into the energy market, promoting renewable energy use.
The Heart of Joy control computer elevates driving dynamics by processing information ten times faster than previous systems. It works seamlessly with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to optimise powertrain, brakes, recuperation, and steering functions. This results in precise directional stability and intuitive steering.
BMW's latest driver assistance systems are among the best globally. The iX3 introduces advanced features like lane change warning, road priority warning, safe exit, and assisted view. These systems enhance safety and convenience by providing detailed driving situation updates through various displays.
Innovative Driver Assistance
The Motorway & City Assistant aids drivers in complex urban scenarios by automatically braking at red lights and resuming when they turn green. It also assists during motorway journeys with automatic lane changes along active navigation routes. This assistant remains active even during automated motorway changes.
BMW's symbiotic driver assistance ensures seamless interaction between technology and driver for comfort and safety functions. The parking functions offer AI-based services for parking space recognition and manoeuvre planning, enhancing the overall parking experience.
Technological Advancements
The new electronics architecture of the BMW iX3 includes four high-performance computers or "superbrains." These enable advanced driver assistance systems and an improved voice assistant called BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Over-the-air updates allow customers to benefit from numerous smart features post-launch.
A significant number of patent applications have been filed by BMW recently due to developments for Neue Klasse technologies. These include innovations in projection technology for Panoramic Vision, control functions of Heart of Joy, battery management systems, electric motor design, and zonal vehicle electrical systems.
In 2024, BMW Group sold 2.45 million passenger cars worldwide alongside over 210,000 motorcycles. Their financial success is rooted in long-term thinking and responsible actions focused on sustainability throughout supply chains until product end-of-life phases.
