Bharat NCAP 2.0 Incoming: Today's 5‑Star Rating Could Become 2‑Star By 2027

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is proposing Bharat NCAP 2.0, which could tighten the current rules and guidelines for crash tests. The new framework proposes stronger build quality, advanced safety technologies, and tougher scoring benchmarks.

Under AIS 197, the new proposal is prepared and sent for feedback. Once approved, it will replace the current system and be implemented from October 2027. The new proposed methods include the Five Pillar rating structure, Five crash tests, pedestrian rating, and post-crash support.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 Proposed guidelines

First, the manufacturers need to make a car that includes safety features like Electronic Stability Control, Curtain Airbags, and Autonomous Emergency Braking. The vehicle needs to score a minimum of 70/100 points, and if it fails in any one of the five pillars, it cannot earn a 5-star rating.

Vehicles will be tested across five categories: Crash Protection (55), Vulnerable Road User Protection (20), Safe Driving (10), Accident Avoidance (10), and Post‑Crash Safety (5). These new safety guidelines will help Bharat NCAP's crash ratings align with global programs such as Euro NCAP.

The crash test will be expanded from two to five and will now have Male, female, and child dummies for testing. The cars will go through offset frontal impact, full-width frontal impact, side impact, pole side impact, and rear impact.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 will also introduce pedestrian safety requirements, under which carmakers must work to reduce injury risks to pedestrians. In addition, post‑crash safety tests will evaluate systems such as automatic emergency calling, door opening mechanisms, seat‑belt buckle release, fire prevention, and electric‑shock risk mitigation.

Cars will also be required to feature accident‑avoidance technologies such as ESC, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Drowsiness Detection, Forward Collision Warning, Hill‑Hold Assist, and AEB (Optional). The current Bharat NCAP regulations remain valid until September 30, 2027, after which Bharat NCAP 2.0 is expected to be implemented by October 2027.
