Bharat NCAP 2.0 Enhances Vehicle Safety Testing With ADAS Integration
India's vehicle safety testing programme, Bharat NCAP, has been updated to Bharat NCAP 2.0, now including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in its crash safety evaluations. This enhancement was announced by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) during the ADAS show in Bengaluru. ARAI's Deputy Director, Ujwala Karle, confirmed the ongoing efforts to integrate these changes.
ADAS features are gaining traction in new car models across India. Brands like Hyundai, Kia, MG, Tata Motors, Honda, and Mahindra are offering affordable vehicles with these technologies. As ADAS becomes more popular, manufacturers are eager to incorporate it into their products. However, adapting ADAS for Indian driving conditions presents a challenge. Karle emphasised the need for systems that can be turned off when necessary.

ADAS includes various intelligent vehicle features aimed at assisting drivers. These features encompass lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. In India, Level 2 ADAS technology is currently available. However, modifications are needed to align with user expectations and driver preferences.
The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), launched in April 2023, follows global NCAP standards. It evaluates passenger vehicles based on crash test performance, enhancing export opportunities for Indian car manufacturers. So far, 14 cars have been tested under this initiative.
Models like the Skoda Kushaq and Mahindra XUV 700 have achieved 5-star safety ratings from Bharat NCAP. The programme aims to elevate vehicle safety standards to international levels, ensuring safer travel on Indian roads. The inclusion of ADAS in Bharat NCAP 2.0 signifies a significant advancement in vehicle safety testing in India.
As technology advances and more vehicles incorporate ADAS systems, there will be a focus on effectively adapting them for Indian roads. This initiative not only boosts domestic vehicle safety but also positions Indian manufacturers competitively in global markets by adhering to stringent safety standards.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Vehicle manufacturers will face stricter criteria for achieving a 5-star rating for their cars. A 5-star rating will only be attainable if the ADAS technology is improved. This development ensures that Indian cars meet high safety standards internationally.
DriveSpark Thinks
The integration of ADAS into Bharat NCAP 2.0 marks a pivotal step forward in vehicle safety testing within India. As more vehicles adopt this system, the focus will remain on adapting them effectively for local conditions.
