Brands like Honda still use this type of transmission in their cars. But, CVT cars feel less engaging to drive on highways and give a rubber-band effect. They are also very noisy at high speeds and need regular maintenance for good performance.
3. Torque Converter Automatic transmission (AT)
These transmissions are often used in Mid to high-end cars to balance comfort and sporty driving. Choosing this type of transmission will offer both good performance and smooth gear shifting. It is also one of the most reliable transmission options in the market.
Though the Torque converter's gear shifts are not as quick as DCTs, they still do their job well. Torque Converter's performance and efficiency depend on the driving style; if revved hard, the fuel consumption will be very high. It is also expensive than CVT and AMT.
4. DCT or DSG
DCT is the most advanced automatic transmission system, and brands like Volkswagen call it DSG. They have two separate clutches for faster gear shifts, and that is why they are mostly used in performance cars. Car brands like Volkswagen, Skoda, and Audi use this type of transmission.
Dual-clutch transmission systems are more expensive than other automatic transmission systems, such as the AMT, CVT, and Torque converter. Their maintenance is also costly, and they are less fuel-efficient in city conditions.
