Automobili Lamborghini Marks Ten Years Of Carbon Neutrality At Sant’Agata Bolognese Production Site
Automobili Lamborghini marks a decade of carbon neutrality at its Sant’Agata Bolognese production site in 2025. This milestone reflects the company's strategic choice to prioritise sustainability. The site was among the first in the Audi Group to receive certification from DNV, highlighting its commitment to reducing emissions and offsetting unavoidable ones through global projects.
"We decided to undertake a courageous journey ten years ago, and we have turned sustainability into strategic leverage for the company’s future. Today we are celebrating an important goal, and above all we are confirming our commitment to a tangible, measurable evolution consistent with the brand’s values," stated Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
Lamborghini's approach involves reducing emissions before compensating for them. Since 2015, they have cut emissions by 49% compared to 2014 levels, despite doubling in size. This was achieved through energy-efficient processes and technologies. The first photovoltaic system was installed in 2010, later expanded to cover 15,000 m², generating over 2 million kWh annually.
The company plans further expansion of its photovoltaic system by 2025. This will increase production by 2.89 million kWh yearly, reducing CO₂ emissions by an additional 1,200 tonnes annually. These efforts enhance energy autonomy and align with their decarbonisation strategy.
Inaugurated in 2017, Lamborghini's Torre 1963 head office achieved LEED Platinum certification with a score of 92 out of 100. Two trigeneration plants began operating in 2015 and 2017, producing electricity, thermal energy, and cooling from natural gas. These plants save approximately 1,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
Lamborghini also adopted Italy's first biogas-fueled district heating system in 2015. It supplies 3,000 MWh of thermal energy yearly while cutting another 500 tons of CO₂ emissions. These initiatives underscore Lamborghini's dedication to environmental responsibility.
Commitment to Transparent Sustainability
Ranieri Niccoli, Chief Manufacturing Officer of Automobili Lamborghini commented: "The Sant'Agata Bolognese facility today is a concrete example of how we can combine first-rate manufacturing and environmental responsibility. Every action is the result of an integrated vision that places efficiency, innovation and sustainability at the heart of our everyday operations."
Lamborghini maintains ISO certifications for environmental management systems to optimise resource use continuously. They also uphold EMAS certification since 2009 and monitor emissions per ISO standards for transparency and impact control.
Local Initiatives and Carbon Offsetting
The production site's emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) totalled 29,849 tons of CO₂ in 2024. Lamborghini offsets these through certified carbon credits while investing in local projects like promoting cycling in Bologna for sustainable transport.
A carbon capture initiative in the Venetian lagoon uses eco-friendly systems to absorb atmospheric CO₂. Since 2022, Lamborghini selects credits certified by top international standards like Gold Standard and Verra for renewable energy projects aligning with their values.
Future Outlook: Sustainability Report
The year also marks the release of Lamborghini's first Sustainability Report as part of its evolving ESG strategy. This report will detail achievements, ongoing initiatives, and future goals while enhancing stakeholder communication on sustainability efforts.
This document will consolidate internal monitoring of environmental performance while reinforcing communication with stakeholders about Lamborghini's commitment to a sustainable industrial model focused on engineering excellence balanced with environmental responsibility.
