Toyota Hilux FCEV Showcased At Auto Expo 2025 - The Invincible One From The Future

In its relentless pursuit of sustainable mobility, Toyota has showcased a hydrogen-fuel-cell version of its renowned Hilux truck At Auto Expo 2025. The Toyota Hiolux FCEV leverages the hydrogen powertrain technology used in the Toyota Mirai sedan with the off-road capabilities of the Hilux pickup truck.

The Toyota Hilux FCEV was first showcased in the UK in 2023 and was birthed in Toyota's Burnaston facility in Derby, is part of an expansive project funded by the British government's Advanced Propulsion Centre. The project's goal is to assess the feasibility and performance of hydrogen-based vehicles for eventual wide-scale production.

Transitioning the Hilux to hydrogen power entailed swapping out its conventional 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine for a fuel cell stack derived from the Mirai. This sophisticated configuration includes three high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks embedded within the vehicle's structure, enabling a significant range of about 590 kilometers. Furthermore, the truck is equipped with a battery positioned in the load bay, tasked with storing electricity generated by the fuel cell stack.

The motor of the Hilux FCEV drives the rear wheels, optimizing performance and efficiency. Moreover, the inclusion of selectable regenerative braking options enhances the driving experience by allowing for one-pedal driving in the FCEV model of the Hilux.
