Aston Martin Valkyrie Secures Sixth Place At Road America In IMSA Championship Race
The Aston Martin Valkyrie finished sixth in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Road America, extending its points run and showcasing strong performance by the THOR Team.
The Aston Martin Valkyrie achieved a sixth-place finish in the eighth round of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Road America. This result marked its best performance yet in global endurance racing and extended its streak of top-ten finishes in the series. The Valkyrie is unique as it competes in both the IMSA and FIA World Endurance Championship this season.
Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis, driving for the Aston Martin THOR team, showcased impressive skills throughout the weekend. The race was filled with incidents, including four Full Course Yellow periods, which they navigated skillfully. Their strategic decisions allowed them to maintain a competitive position during the race.
The Valkyrie demonstrated potential from the start, setting the second-fastest time in Friday's free practice. Gunn qualified tenth, just 0.7 seconds off pole position on the challenging 4.05-mile circuit. The team opted to keep Gunn on track during early pit stops, securing a strong track position that they held for much of the race.
During De Angelis's stint, the Valkyrie climbed to fifth place amid various strategies employed by teams during Full Course Yellow phases. In the final 40 minutes, without interruptions, it maintained its advantage over competitors to finish comfortably in sixth place, just 16.5 seconds behind the winner.
Ross Gunn expressed pride in their progress: "This was a very strong weekend for the car and the team. I’m very proud of everybody that’s working hard to improve the performance." He acknowledged they are not yet where they want to be but noted significant progress.
Roman De Angelis shared his excitement: "It was a pretty good weekend for us. This was obviously our best result so far with this Aston Martin Valkyrie." He enjoyed competing against seasoned drivers and looked forward to building on this performance at Indianapolis.
Aston Martin's Broader Success
Aston Martin Vantage also celebrated victories globally. Comtoyou Racing secured double class wins in France's GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Silver class at Magny-Cours. Meanwhile, D’station Racing dominated Japan's AUTOBACS SUPER GT Series GT300 class at Fuji International Speedway.
The Heart of Racing team faced challenges at Road America but managed to finish ninth in their class despite an incident that sent their car airborne. They now hold third place in their championship standings with three rounds remaining.
Future Prospects and Team Goals
Ian James, Team Principal of Aston Martin THOR Team, praised their efforts: "This was a landmark result for the car and the team." He emphasized ongoing work to enhance performance with each race as they prepare for Indianapolis.
Adam Carter from Aston Martin highlighted their achievements: "To have delivered a run of six consecutive top ten finishes since Valkyrie’s IMSA debut at Sebring in March is no small achievement." He noted that competing against top endurance manufacturers is part of their journey.
The next challenge for Valkyrie will be at Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 19-21 September. As they continue refining their strategy and performance, anticipation builds for further success in upcoming races.
