All-New Mercedes-Benz GLC With EQ Technology Excels In Winter Testing Conditions

The all-electric GLC from Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine expectations, building on the success of its predecessor. In 2024, it became the brand's top-selling series globally. This new model introduces advanced technology, enhancing performance, range, and charging speed while retaining the versatility and practicality that GLC customers value.

During rigorous winter testing in Sweden, the electric GLC demonstrated its capabilities under extreme conditions. "Our new electric GLC is a car without compromises – and we test it just as uncompromisingly," said Christoph Starzynski, Vice President Overall Vehicle Development & Integration at Mercedes-Benz Group AG. "It represents innovation and quality – a fact we have proven in the Scandinavian winter."

The all-electric GLC boasts impressive range and efficiency even in cold climates. It features an 800-volt architecture with sophisticated drive units that optimise performance and reduce charging times. The primary rear axle drive unit includes a two-speed transmission for enhanced efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz offers various high-voltage battery options for the GLC. The top-tier battery supports DC charging at over 320 kW1. These batteries differ in cell chemistry, using silicon oxide blended into graphite anodes for higher energy density, resulting in longer ranges and lighter weight.

In Swedish Arjeplog's harsh winter conditions, the GLC excelled with its confident handling and responsive all-wheel drive system. The 4MATIC system ensures superior traction on icy roads by engaging or disengaging the front-axle drive unit as needed through a Disconnect Unit (DCU).

Sensors detect wheel spin to distribute torque effectively, maintaining optimal driving force. The rear axle's electric drive unit, developed by Mercedes-Benz, sets new standards with impressive power delivery. High-performance power electronics with silicon carbide inverters enhance energy efficiency.

Innovative Braking System

The GLC's braking system combines previously separate components into a compact module for precise feedback. It optimises braking energy recuperation to extend range while ensuring consistent brake pedal feel whether using recuperation or friction braking.

This system meets Mercedes-Benz's high safety standards by reliably switching to hydraulic fallback when necessary. It ensures safe braking behaviour under all conditions.

Rigorous Testing Program

Mercedes-Benz conducts extensive testing near the Arctic Circle to ensure vehicle integrity under extreme conditions. Their Arjeplog testing centre features challenging tracks that demand much from drive and control systems.

Each new model undergoes over 500 tests before production approval. For electric vehicles like the GLC, additional tests focus on eDrive and charging technologies to meet customer needs across various scenarios.

Ensuring Comfort and Efficiency

The all-electric GLC maintains passenger comfort with an air-side heat pump standardly equipped for temperature regulation. This system uses waste heat from various sources to efficiently heat or cool the interior without compromising energy use.

The heat pump also preconditions the high-voltage battery for optimal fast-charging performance while keeping passengers comfortable during charging sessions.

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA), based in Atlanta, oversees distribution, marketing, and customer service for Mercedes-Benz products in the U.S., offering a diverse luxury lineup including dynamic all-electric vehicles.
