Akio Toyoda Receives Prestigious Industry Leadership Award From SAE Foundation For Contributions To Mobility

Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, was honoured with the 2025 Industry Leadership Award by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation. This recognition took place at the 27th Annual SAE Foundation Celebration in Pontiac, Michigan. The event celebrates industry leaders who inspire future innovators. Toyoda's leadership has been pivotal in Toyota's global mobility advancements.

Toyota Motor North America is marking this recognition by donating $1 million to support SAE’s A World in Motion (AWIM) program. This initiative introduces students to STEM education and essential skills for future mobility careers. The donation aligns with Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities initiative, which targets Pre-K to 12th-grade schools across the U.S.

The collaboration between AWIM and Driving Possibilities aims to boost interest in STEM fields and prepare students for future careers. Together, they will provide STEM-focused programs to nearly 24,000 students and offer critical training to about 700 teachers within current Driving Possibilities communities.

Jamie Ferguson, executive director of SAE Foundation & STEM Learning, stated, "Mr. Toyoda’s passion for driving excellence extends beyond the automotive industry, his commitment to education and Toyota’s investment in STEM programs like AWIM will leave a lasting impact on students and future engineers."

Toyoda has been a key figure in steering Toyota through technological changes during his tenure as President and CEO from 2009 to 2023. His leadership continues as chairman, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and workforce development. Under his guidance, Toyota remains committed to advancing sustainable mobility solutions.

Toyota has been part of North America's cultural landscape for nearly seven decades. The company is dedicated to promoting sustainable next-generation mobility through its Toyota and Lexus brands. With over 1,800 dealerships across North America, Toyota employs nearly 64,000 people who contribute to designing and assembling vehicles.

Future Manufacturing Plans

In spring 2025, Toyota plans to begin manufacturing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles at its North Carolina plant. Currently offering 32 electrified vehicle options, Toyota leads with more electrified vehicles on the road than any other automaker.

This strategic focus on electrification underscores Toyota's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry. By investing in battery production and expanding its range of electrified vehicles, Toyota aims to meet growing demand while reducing environmental impact.

The collaboration between AWIM and Driving Possibilities exemplifies how partnerships can enhance educational opportunities in STEM fields. By supporting these initiatives, Toyota is helping shape a skilled workforce ready for future challenges in mobility.
