Acura And Katherine Legge Return To Pikes Peak With Ambitions For A New Record In 2024
Katherine Legge is set to return to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 22, aiming to break the front-wheel-drive record. Her rookie attempt in 2024 saw her finish just seconds behind the current record. Rusty Smith, a U.S. Olympic speed skater, will drive the official pace car, an Integra Type S HRC Prototype, showcasing new performance parts developed by Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US).
Acura and HRC US are entering the Time Attack 1 division with the Integra Type S DE5 race car. Katherine Legge, an INDYCAR and IMSA veteran, will drive this vehicle. She previously secured a top-five finish in this category during her debut in 2024. The current front-wheel-drive record of 10:48.094 was set by Acura engineer Nick Robinson in 2018.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of America's oldest motorsport events, dating back to 1916. Drivers from various disciplines compete on a challenging mountain course that starts at 9,390 feet and climbs to a summit of 14,115 feet. This event is known as the "Race to the Clouds" due to its high-altitude challenges.
HRC US plans to produce authentic performance parts for street, track, and off-road use following interest in the Acura Integra Type S HRC Prototype revealed at Monterey Car Week in August 2024. These parts aim to enhance engine, suspension, and braking performance while reducing weight.
Rusty Smith has represented Team USA three times in short track speed skating at the Olympics. He won bronze medals in both individual and relay events. Smith also has a passion for high-performance vehicles and owns several Honda and Acura models.
