Acceler8 Automotive Education Program Secures California State Grant To Expand Training For At-Risk Youth
Acceler8, a non-profit focused on automotive education for at-risk youth, has received funding from the California Community Reinvestment Grants (CalCRG) program. This support will enable Acceler8 to expand its training programs in Los Angeles. The initiative aims to provide hands-on automotive education and career pathways for underserved youth, helping them overcome economic challenges and potential involvement in the juvenile justice system.
With the new funding, Acceler8 plans to assist up to 420 young people over three years. They will offer two 16-week courses annually, each enrolling 20-30 students. These courses focus on preparing participants for ASE Certification in Basic Mechanics through both theoretical instruction and practical automotive training.
The courses are designed to give students foundational knowledge in auto repair, parts installation, and maintenance. Students will learn skills ranging from basic tune-ups and oil changes to advanced techniques like computer diagnostics and engine repairs. Upon completion, students will have opportunities for job placements, vocational training, and apprenticeships in the automotive industry.
In addition to the main courses, Acceler8 will conduct four-week workshops quarterly. Each session will serve 20 students and introduce them to the automotive industry through lessons, hands-on experience, and field trips. Guest speakers from the industry will engage with students to inspire them toward automotive careers.
"We’re honored and delighted to receive support from the State of California for our mission to provide youth with career opportunities in the automotive industry," said Charles Woodruff, co-founder and CEO of Acceler8 Education Program. "Through this investment, our students will undoubtedly recognize the state stands firmly behind them on their journey to adulthood and gainful employment."
Acceler8 has already provided vocational training for over 100 youth in Los Angeles. Its community outreach program has reached even more people through partnerships like the Formula DRIFT motorsports series. As a partner in the Formula DRIFT Driven Experience, Acceler8 has introduced more than 3,000 youth nationwide to motorsports over four years.
Future Plans
The CalCRG funding allows Acceler8 to expand its programs further as it enters a new growth phase. A new facility is set to open in downtown Los Angeles' Arts District later this summer. This expansion is made possible by dedicated staff and volunteers who have built a solid foundation for student training.
The Accelerate Education Group (Acceler8) is supported by the Los Angeles Police Protective League. It offers alternatives to crime and substance abuse by providing education that builds future leaders in Los Angeles County. The program relies on donations and sponsorships from the community.
Acceler8 invites qualified volunteers to join their efforts by mentoring students or sharing expertise. For more information about enrolling a student or volunteering, visit acceler8education.org.
