Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League Returns In 2025 With USD 2.25M Prize Pool And Global Teams

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is set to return on 15 November at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a prize pool of USD $2.25 million. This event, organised by ASPIRE under the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), aims to advance autonomous mobility through a global virtual racing series. The announcement was made during the Make it in the Emirates Forum in Abu Dhabi.

Following its debut in April 2024, which attracted over 10,000 spectators and more than 1 million online viewers, A2RL Season 2 promises even greater ambition. The league will see expanded international participation and introduce a new platform for advancing autonomous technology. Teams from France and Japan will join returning teams from the USA, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy, and the UAE.

The Emirates Autonomous Vehicle (EAV 24), an upgraded racecar for A2RL, showcases significant advancements in performance and engineering. Assembled in the UAE, it highlights the nation's growing expertise in AI and robotics. Built on the Super Formula SF23 platform, EAV-24 features enhanced sensors and refined control systems tailored for autonomous racing challenges.

A key innovation this season is the introduction of A2RL SIM-Sprint. This virtual racing series aims to accelerate AI development by providing a controlled environment for testing algorithms under diverse conditions. It allows teams to refine their autonomous driving systems beyond real-world testing limitations.

This year’s league welcomes elite research teams from ten countries, with France and Japan joining for the first time. The competition continues to bridge simulation with real-world application, positioning itself as a leader in autonomous system challenges worldwide.

The Dallara Super Formula SF23 car remains central to the competition. Built from sustainable materials and weighing 690 kg, it is one of the fastest open-wheel race cars globally after Formula One. Equipped with advanced braking systems and custom-built autonomy stacks, it offers teams a cutting-edge platform for optimising AI algorithms.

Commitment to Innovation

H.E. Faisal Al Bannai emphasised that A2RL is not just about testing technology but accelerating its evolution under demanding conditions. "It’s a showcase of engineering excellence," he stated. "From high-speed racing to real-world applications, we are demonstrating what’s possible when nations invest in deep tech innovation."

Stephane Timpano highlighted that combining physical racing with virtual precision enables pushing AI boundaries further. "This year’s expanded league reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to challenge-driven innovation," he said.

A structured progression system within SIM-Sprint will allow participants to advance from Sim Academy to Sim Pro levels before qualifying for real-world A2RL events. This initiative aims to open opportunities for fans and aspiring developers worldwide.

Through ASPIRE and ATRC's efforts, A2RL positions Abu Dhabi as a leader in high-performance autonomy development globally. The league transforms how intelligent systems are developed while inspiring future STEM talent across various fields.
