ABB's PixelPaint Technology Revolutionises Sustainable Painting At Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen Plant

ABB's PixelPaint technology, known for its precision, is now operational at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant in Germany. This innovative system enhances traditional painting methods by applying detailed paint designs with high accuracy. The technology began in 2025, offering new customisation options for luxury models while reducing emissions and material use.

The PixelPaint system features a paint head similar to an inkjet printer, capable of applying both large colour areas and intricate details precisely. Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, stated, "PixelPaint uses an award-winning paint head similar to an inkjet printer that can apply large areas of color as well as precise details with complete accuracy." This fully automated process eliminates manual intervention, allowing manufacturers to meet growing consumer demands for personalisation while cutting emissions.

PixelPaint's design includes over 1,000 tiny nozzles on a robot like the IRB 5500 series. These nozzles are individually controlled and work with ABB’s 3D vision system. Coordinated by RobotStudio software, the system ensures all paint adheres to the car without overspray or misting. This reduces waste and environmental impact significantly.

Mercedes-Benz first applied PixelPaint on the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. This model features an obsidian black hood with a Maybach pattern in graphite grey, showcasing designs impossible with traditional methods. Arno van der Merwe from Mercedes-Benz AG remarked, "With PixelPaint, we are setting a new benchmark in painting technology."

The success of this project relied on collaboration between ABB, PPG (the paint supplier), and Mercedes-Benz's team. Dr. Julia Schuchardt from Mercedes-Benz AG noted their ongoing efforts to expand colour options and motifs for customers. "The success of this project was only possible due to the close cooperation between ABB, the high-quality paint supplier, PPG, and the Mercedes-Benz project team," she said.

ABB's smart technologies are revolutionising automotive manufacturing by digitalising processes like painting. Their RB1000i-S atomizer achieves up to 99% transfer efficiency, using less paint and materials. These advancements make manufacturers more sustainable and competitive.
