ABB's PixelPaint Technology Selected By Stellantis For Sustainable DS Automobiles' DS N°8 Production
ABB's PixelPaint technology has been chosen by Stellantis for use at its Melfi, Italy plant. This advanced system will apply precise paint finishes to the DS Automobiles’ DS N°8 electric flagship. The innovative process is fully automated and sustainable, enhancing efficiency while reducing energy use and emissions.
The Melfi facility, a key site for Stellantis, will implement ABB’s PixelPaint with mono coat paint from Nippon Paint. This technology will be used to create the distinctive duo-tone paintwork of the DS N°8. Production is set to increase in the latter half of 2025, reflecting the brand's French elegance.
PixelPaint is gaining recognition among top automotive designers for its ability to produce unique finishes. Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, stated that the traditional method for DS N°8’s deep-black duo-tone finish was labor-intensive. PixelPaint eliminates manual masking and multiple paintshop visits, boosting efficiency and cutting emissions.
This technology uses a paint head with over 1,000 tiny nozzles on an ABB robot like the IRB 5500 series. Coordinated by ABB’s RobotStudio® software and a 3D vision system, it ensures precise application without overspray or misting. This reduces waste and supports DS Automobiles’ sustainability goals.
Silvio Licitra, Head of Paint Process Engineering at Stellantis, highlighted how DS N°8 combines design with sustainability. "DS N°8 redefines the French Art of Travel," he said. Its sleek design invites long journeys in electric comfort, while its duo-tone paintwork reflects modern French coachbuilding.
The collaboration between ABB, Stellantis, and Nippon Paint was announced at SURCAR Europe in Cannes. They received the Innovation Award at this international conference on automotive body finishing.
