Abarth And Lexus Owners Experience Highest Vehicle Theft Risk In 2024 Analysis
In 2024, Abarth and Lexus vehicles were at the highest risk of theft compared to other brands. Analysis of DVLA data revealed that these cars faced a greater proportional threat of being stolen. Five Lexus models ranked among the top ten most vulnerable, with the ES300 saloon and RX450 being particularly targeted. Conversely, Tesla and TVR models were statistically the least likely to be stolen.
The Ford Fiesta was the most stolen car in the UK last year, with 4,719 reported thefts. This figure was more than double that of the Volkswagen Golf, which came second. Despite its popularity as a target, Zetec and Titanium models were more frequently stolen than the Fiesta ST variant. Overall, Ford had 9,284 vehicles reported stolen in 2024, making it the brand with the highest number of thefts.
When considering thefts proportionally to the number of cars on the road, Ford dropped to 13th place with a 1-in-460 chance of theft. Abarth topped this list with a 1-in-116 chance of being stolen. Lexus followed closely behind, with their RX450 model recording 717 thefts in 2024 alone.
The risk for Lexus owners was significant last year. The ES300 saloon had an alarming 1-in-30 chance of being stolen. Five Lexus models appeared in the top ten most at-risk vehicles for theft. This highlights a concerning trend for owners of this Japanese brand.
Tesla owners experienced fewer worries about theft, with only 33 incidents reported last year. The Model 3 accounted for as many losses as all other Tesla models combined. TVR also showed resilience against theft; despite having nearly 11,000 registered vehicles nationwide, only one TVR T350 was reported stolen in all of 2024.
Industry Response to Theft Concerns
Alex Kefford from automotive PR agency loop noted that while Range Rover previously faced insurance challenges due to high theft rates, Lexus now faces greater risks proportionally. Jaguar Land Rover has responded by updating software and introducing new security measures like ultra-wideband keys.
The Ford Fiesta's situation is different due to its popularity and demand for spare parts amid supply chain issues and economic challenges. Many owners have turned to second-hand parts sources that may not always be legitimate.
On another note, a Ferrari Purosangue was stolen before its owner could fully enjoy it. Statistically speaking, Ferraris have about a 1-in-4000 chance of being taken—similar odds to losing a Daewoo—but this offers little comfort to affected owners.
