70 Years Since The Launch Of Suzulight: A Look At Suzuki's First Car And Its Legacy

This autumn marks a significant milestone for Suzuki as it prepares to introduce the e Vitara, its first electric vehicle. Reflecting on Suzuki Motor Corporation's journey, it all began 70 years ago. In 1955, Michio Suzuki delivered his first production car, the Suzulight, to a local doctor who previously used a bicycle for house calls. This marked a pivotal moment in Suzuki's history.

Michio Suzuki initially ventured into business in March 1920 by manufacturing textile looms. These looms gained popularity until the early 1950s when the cotton industry faced a global decline. In response, Suzuki diversified into motorised transport, launching its first motorcycle in 1953 and its first car two years later.

The Suzulight's development began in 1937 but was halted due to World War II. It resumed in 1954 with the formation of Suzuki Motor Co Limited. Embracing the 'Yaramaika' spirit, meaning 'Let's do it,' Michio Suzuki researched international vehicles and acquired valuable insights.

The Suzulight was compact, under three metres long and weighing just over 500kg. It featured a pioneering 360cc, 15PS two-cylinder, two-stroke engine—the first of its kind in Japan. The car also boasted front-wheel drive and independent coil spring suspension.

Suzuki's team conducted initial road tests on the Suzulight prototype, including a memorable 300km journey across the challenging Hakone mountains between Hamamatsu and Tokyo. Despite arriving late at night, they presented the car to Yanase Auto's president, who thoroughly tested it and approved production.

Production of the Suzulight began in October 1955 with an initial output of three to four cars per month. By early 1956, monthly production increased to 30 units. This marked the beginning of Suzuki's reputation as experts in small cars.

Legacy and Future Prospects

Today, Suzuki Motor Corporation is renowned globally for its expertise in small cars, producing over three million units annually. By 2030, they aim to reach four million units per year. Michio Suzuki's vision of lightweight vehicle design continues with platforms like 'Heartect' used in models such as Swift and Vitara.

The introduction of 'Heartect-e' specifically designed for e Vitara underscores this commitment to innovation while maintaining lightweight efficiency. As Suzuki embarks on this new chapter with its electric vehicle launch, it remains rooted in its legacy of pioneering small car solutions.
