Rugged SUV design
The original 1990 Sierra looked more rugged and robust than the modern Sierra. It was rectangular and boxy, but the new Sierra looks sharper and sleeker. It also gets slim LED headlights and DRLS, compared to the rectangular headlights of the original. Overall, comparing the design, the original Sierra was more SUV-like than the modern Sierra.
4x4 Capabilities
The biggest miss was the 4x4 configuration. Tata decided not to include the 4-wheel drive in the 2025 Sierra, as most buyers do not opt for off-roading, except for enthusiasts. Yet, old Sierra is known for its off-roading capabilities, and the original fanboys will definitely miss those features in the 2025 Tata Sierra.
Engine and performance
The original Sierra came with only a Naturally Aspirated diesel engine, which was later updated with a Turbocharged diesel engine, along with a 5-speed manual and 4x4 drive option. However, the new Sierra will have all three powertrains: Petrol, Diesel and Electric.
Tata Sierra is expected to have a 1.5 litre NA petrol engine, 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine, 1.5 litre diesel engine and an electric powertrain from the Tata Harrier EV. The ICE variants will have both manual and automatic gear options.
Interior design and features
The New Sierra boasts a stunning interior design featuring twin infotainment systems, ventilated seats, a full panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, premium speakers and a sound system. However, the original Sierra had a very minimal interior with analogue dials and physical controls.
It simply tells us how technology and cars have evolved in the last two decades. The 2025 Sierra is also expected to feature world-class safety features, including ADAS, airbags, ABS, Hill Hold Assist and much more.
No Three Door
In 1990, when the Tata Sierra was introduced, it was a three-door car with only two front doors and one rear door. Passengers seated in the rear seats will have to fold the front passenger seat to enter or exit the vehicle, which can be more uncomfortable in long drives. It also misses out the original externally mounted spare wheel.
The 2025 Sierra is more practical, as it features 5 doors, even after retaining the curved rear glass. So thumbs up to Tata design engineers for providing users with more practicality and comfort.
