Suzuki Fronx Recalled In Australia & New Zealand After ANCAP Seatbelt Retractor Failure

Japanese carmaker Suzuki has recalled the Fronx in Australia and New Zealand after the crossover's testing by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) exposed a defect in the left rear seatbelt retractor mechanism. The Suzuki Fronx was given a one-star safety rating by ANCAP.

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Suzuki Australia have issued two voluntary safety recalls for certain 2025 Suzuki Fronx vehicles. The first Australian recall, REC-006520, covers 249 units of the 2025 Suzuki Fronx, with the defective left rear seatbelt retractor mechanism potentially releasing excessive belt length during an accident or hard braking and increasing the risk of injury to rear seat occupants.

The second Australian recall, REC-006521, affects 75 additional Fronx vehicles, also citing the left rear seatbelt retractor mechanism defect that may not operate as intended, with Suzuki Australia advising owners of listed vehicles to cease using rear seats until the issue is investigated.

Both Australian recall notices state that Suzuki Australia and Suzuki Motor Corporation will advise owners of affected Fronx vehicles and are undertaking immediate and urgent investigations, with further safety activities to be facilitated upon completion of the review.

The recalls were issued earlier this month on the 23rd of December 2025 by Australia's Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, with the department telling owners to contact Suzuki owners for information on the recall action.

The recalls in Australia follow a one-star ANCAP safety rating issued to the Suzuki Fronx after crash testing revealed a rare rear seatbelt retractor failure and poor occupant protection performance in the full-width frontal impact test, prompting warnings from safety authorities.

In New Zealand, the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has issued a safety warning after the ANCAP crash test results, urging owners of Suzuki Fronx vehicles registered in the country not to carry passengers in the rear seats until the defect is resolved.

NZTA confirmed that the Fronx received a one-star safety rating from ANCAP based on poor crash performance, including the rear seatbelt failure, and noted that a similar failure in a real-world collision could increase the risk of serious injury or death for rear seat occupants.

There are approximately 1,115 Suzuki Fronx vehicles registered on New Zealand roads, and Suzuki New Zealand has halted sales of the Fronx in the market while contacting owners with information and urging them to refrain from using the rear seating until corrective measures are taken.

Suzuki New Zealand's action and the NZTA notice follow communication between the transport regulator and the manufacturer, with owners advised of the recall notice and provided details on contacting Suzuki for additional information while investigations continue.
