ZF LIFETEC Rearranges Driver Airbag On Steering Wheel, Creating Design Freedom
Innovative Steering Wheel Design by ZF LIFETEC
Alfdorf / Penzing, Germany. The steering wheel has evolved significantly since the introduction of driver airbags in the 1980s. Initially, airbags were centrally located within the steering wheel hub, serving as a crucial safety feature. Over the past three decades, this design has become standard in most vehicles, enhancing safety and reducing injuries during accidents.
Today, the steering wheel is more than just a safety component; it is also a command center for entertainment and assistance functions. ZF LIFETEC has introduced a new generation of steering wheels that expands design possibilities for future vehicle interiors. This innovative design positions the driver airbag to deploy from the top side of the steering wheel, allowing for a seamless, smartphone-like interface.
Harald Lutz, Head of Development at ZF LIFETEC, explains, "With this new concept, we are enabling design freedom for steering wheels without compromising safety." The new airbag deployment method allows for a continuous surface on the steering wheel, integrating force-sensitive controls for various vehicle functions.
The trend towards seamless design is evident in modern vehicle interiors. Manufacturers are increasingly eliminating joints and gaps, opting for integrated lighting options and displays throughout the vehicle. This trend extends to future steering wheels, which will feature greater integration of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) functions and new surfaces.
The seamless design opens up possibilities for using new materials and shapes while maintaining functionality. On-demand functions, touch displays, or a central screen are now conceivable. However, user-friendliness remains paramount as the steering wheel is a critical safety component.
Hybrid solutions can be implemented with this new concept. For example, an alternative rotary switch combined with a force-sensitive and tactile surface can be integrated into the steering wheel. This allows drivers to operate the system safely while maintaining focus on driving.
Additionally, hands-on detection technology is incorporated into current and future steering wheels. A capacitive sensor under the leather surface detects whether the driver is merely touching or securely gripping the wheel. This technology enhances safe vehicle control.
