Yokohama Rubber To Equip Abu Dhabi's First Autonomous Car Race With Advan Tyres
In a groundbreaking move for the world of motorsports, Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has announced its partnership with the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), marking a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous vehicle racing. The inaugural event, set to take place on April 27, 2024, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will see the deployment of Yokohama's Advan racing tyres on the SF23 formula racing cars. These vehicles, integral to the Japanese Super Formula Championship series, are revered in Asia as the pinnacle of formula racing.
The A2RL, orchestrated by Aspire—the technology program management and business development arm of the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council—aims to redefine future mobility through this driverless racing series. Japan Race Promotion Inc. (JRP), the entity behind Super Formula, is providing the SF23 cars, now equipped with cutting-edge autonomous driving software developed by Aspire. This collaboration underscores a shared vision for innovation in motorsports and autonomous technology.
Eight teams from across Asia, North America, and Europe will compete in this pioneering event, leveraging their proprietary software and algorithms to vie for a first-place prize of $2.25 million. This competition not only highlights the technical prowess of the participating teams but also sets a new benchmark for autonomous vehicle performance in a competitive setting.
Yokohama's contribution extends beyond tyre supply; through its partnership with JRP, it is playing a pivotal role in supporting the A2RL. The Advan A005 tyres selected for the race are notable for their 33% sustainable material content ratio, incorporating natural rubber, naturally derived compounding agents such as oil from oil palm nuts and orange peels, recycled iron, rubber from waste tyres, and synthetic rubber produced via the mass balance method.
This initiative aligns with Yokohama's broader strategy under its new three-year medium-term management plan, Yokohama Transformation 2026 (YX2026). The plan focuses on maximizing sales ratios of high-value-added tyres by expanding its global flagship Advan brand, along with the Geolandar brand for SUVs and pickup trucks, winter tyres, and tyres larger than 18 inches. Motorsports activities are central to Yokohama's efforts to enhance the Advan and Geolandar brands' market presence.
