Yates Seals Trofeo Pirelli Title, Rees Triumphs In Coppa Shell At Ferrari Challenge UK 2024
Gilbert Yates has clinched the Trofeo Pirelli title in the Ferrari Challenge UK. Racing for Charles Hurst, Yates secured the championship with a victory in Race 1 at Silverstone's final round. Meanwhile, Mike Dewhirst's win keeps the Coppa Shell competition alive, with Robert Rees still leading.
In Trofeo Pirelli, Gilbert Yates set a remarkable lap time of 2:04.585 to claim pole position. Over in Coppa Shell, Mike Dewhirst showcased his skills by securing pole with a 2:07.252 lap time.
During Race 1 of Trofeo Pirelli, Andrew Morrow initially pressured Yates, who managed to maintain his lead. The two Irish drivers built a significant gap from third-placed Lucky Khera, who later retired early. Despite Morrow's efforts, Yates emerged victorious, securing the 2024 championship in his debut season.
Dewhirst faced challenges starting from the pit exit due to an unscheduled pit stop during formation laps. Championship leader Robert Rees took the front grid position. Dewhirst climbed through the ranks, overtaking several competitors within the first ten minutes to reach podium contention.
Stuart Marston returned to Coppa Shell and quickly closed in on Rees for the lead. Dewhirst seized his chance and laid down his fastest laps to catch up. Marston eventually passed Rees at Stowe, followed by Dewhirst shortly after. In a thrilling finish, Dewhirst overtook Marston on the final lap to secure his fourth win of the season and narrow Rees’s championship lead to just eight points.
Sunday Showdown
The final day at Silverstone saw intense battles as Yates continued his dominance in Trofeo Pirelli by posting a 2:04.418 lap time for his eighth pole of the season. Stuart Marston secured pole in Coppa Shell with a narrow margin over Paul Simmerson.
Yates quickly gained a one-second lead over Morrow in Trofeo Pirelli's race before an incident between Morrow and Haymandhra Pillai dropped them down the order. This allowed Yates to extend his lead significantly and secure his fifth win of the season.
Coppa Shell Title Decider
Rees made an electrifying start but was soon overtaken by Simmerson. Dewhirst charged towards podium positions while Rees spun out, falling to the back of the pack and giving Dewhirst an advantage.
Dewhirst pushed hard to climb up the order but faced resistance from Marston. As they neared race leader Simmerson, a three-car battle ensued. Dewhirst passed Marston with a minute left and seemed poised for victory until Rees made a last-minute move to finish fifth, securing enough points for his first Coppa Shell title.
