Xtrac Celebrates Third Win Of Prestigious Princess Royal Training Award
Xtrac, a leader in transmission systems for motorsport and high-performance automotive applications, has been honoured with its third Princess Royal Training Award. This recognition makes Xtrac the only company in its industry to achieve this milestone thrice. Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, will present the award at a ceremony in November, where 52 winners, including Bentley Motors and Lotus Cars, will be celebrated.
"We’re delighted to receive this accolade again because it recognises our long-standing investment in developing the proficiency of all our multi-skilled employees," says Xtrac’s chief executive, Adrian Moore. "The hard work we put into our training schemes ensures the capability of our future workforce for the benefit of all stakeholders, including our customers, employees, investors, and suppliers. It is the cornerstone of our success."
Xtrac's commitment to training is evident from its history. The company introduced its apprenticeship scheme in 1991 and has collaborated with Newbury College since 2003 and University Centre Newbury (UCN) since 2020. These partnerships have helped deliver advanced manufacturing apprenticeships. Xtrac's dedication to engineering training has set a benchmark for best practices in high-growth companies.
In 2018 and 2021, Xtrac was previously recognised for its apprenticeship programme. Since then, it has established an in-house training academy and expanded its mentoring network. This led to a visit by Her Royal Highness in 2022 to their global headquarters in Thatcham, Berkshire. During this visit, Dame Ann Limb DBE DL and Kirstie Donnelly MBE were present alongside Her Royal Highness.
Based in Berkshire, UK, with additional locations in Indiana and North Carolina in the USA, Xtrac exports 70% of its output globally. The company serves Asia, Australia, Europe, and both North and South America. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Xtrac started with just a few employees but now boasts around 500 highly qualified staff working on international customer programmes.
Over 30% of Xtrac’s workforce is under 30 years old. Continuous investment in training is crucial for business growth. Recent investments include new test facilities and increased manufacturing capacity to meet global demand. This focus on development ensures that Xtrac remains a world leader in advanced motorsport and high-performance automotive transmission systems.
Industry Impact
Xtrac supplies world-class transmission products like gearboxes and differentials for various propulsion systems. Half of its business caters to hybrid and electric vehicles. The company's emphasis on performance and reliability has made it a trusted supplier for top professional race teams worldwide.
Alongside motorsport, Xtrac also works with the high-performance automotive sector—the fastest-growing part of its business. It collaborates with leading hypercar manufacturers to provide transmission systems for flagship models. Customers value Xtrac's expertise supported by significant investments in research and innovation.
MiddleGround Capital acquired a majority shareholding in Xtrac earlier this year through its European office—its first acquisition there. MiddleGround Capital is an operationally focused US private equity firm investing globally in middle-market B2B industrial companies.
The Princess Royal Training Awards
The Princess Royal Training Awards were established by City & Guilds nine years ago to recognise excellent training across all sectors in the UK and Ireland. Open to organisations of any size or sector—including private, public, and not-for-profit—they highlight outstanding training programmes that positively impact organisations and their people.
The awards are managed by the City & Guilds Foundation which supports social investment through recognition programmes like these awards.
Xtrac’s achievements underscore its commitment to excellence in training within the automotive industry while maintaining strong global partnerships and continuous innovation.
