Formula DRIFT Celebrates Women's Historic Achievements And Roles In Motorsport
Formula DRIFT recently celebrated a historic achievement when Amanda Sorensen, a 21-year-old driver from the USA, secured second place in the Link ECU PROSPEC Championship. This marked the highest finish ever by a female driver in the sport's 21-year history. To commemorate this milestone, Formula DRIFT Media produced a special video highlighting the significant roles women play in the sport.
The video features three prominent female drivers in PROSPEC, including Amanda Sorensen, who joined the series in 2021. Currently ranked seventh in the Championship standings, she drives the US Air Force / Sorensen Motorsports BMW and is having her best season yet. Kelsey Rowlings, another experienced driver who joined Formula DRIFT in 2015, pilots the 303 Sta-bil Nissan S14.5 and is currently 11th in the standings.
Kelsey has been instrumental in mentoring new drivers like Zandara Kennedy from Canada. Zandara joined in 2023 and drives the Zeedrives Nissan S14. She is actively working to introduce more women to Formula DRIFT through group track visits. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to increase female participation in the sport.
Women also play crucial roles behind the scenes. Female spotters provide strategic advice to drivers on competitor positions and optimal lines. Mechanics like Shelby Crackston at RTR Motorsports ensure cars remain competitive. Laurette Nicoll, known for her tough questions, has been a long-time Pit Reporter for Formula DRIFT, offering fans insights into drivers' perspectives.
The operational side of Formula DRIFT also benefits from experienced female staff members. Casidi Tanaka-Fixmer manages registration and ticketing, while Joyce Leung handles event logistics. Their contributions help keep events running smoothly and efficiently.
Upcoming Events
The next round of Formula DRIFT PRO will be held at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA on August 9-10. The final PROSPEC Round will take place at Utah Motorsports Campus from August 29-31.
