Volvo XC90 Unveiled: New Upgrades Boost Flagship Hybrid SUV's Appeal
The new Volvo XC90, unveiled today, represents a significant upgrade to an already iconic model. This flagship hybrid SUV now boasts enhanced technology and design both inside and out. Known for its comfort, the seven-seater XC90 is among the safest vehicles on the road. In its plug-in hybrid form, it offers over 70 kilometres of electric range per charge under the WLTP testing cycle.
Safety remains paramount in the XC90. The vehicle includes an advanced safety cage and a suite of active safety features. Using radar and a front camera, it can detect lane drift and steer back to avoid collisions. It also helps prevent running off the road and can use braking and steering to avoid other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals.
Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, stated, "The new XC90 exudes confidence, and why wouldn’t it? Our hybrid flagship has been one of our best-selling models for years and it’s still a favourite among many customers." He added that the XC90 delivers on comfort, space, luxury, versatility, and hybrid efficiency.
The interior has seen significant updates aimed at enhancing practicality. A larger central touchscreen with higher resolution improves user experience by offering new features and apps. The cabin redesign includes more storage space in the centre console and additional cupholders. Enhanced illumination adds a luxurious feel at night.
The renewed dashboard now features horizontal shapes with decorative panels made from premium recycled materials. New vertical air vents split the dashboard for a textured finish. The wireless phone charger is conveniently placed behind the central tunnel.
Comfortable Ride
The XC90's ride quality has improved with legendary seating comfort and better suspension as standard. Each damper adapts mechanically to road conditions for optimal comfort and stability. Optional air suspension works with an active chassis that monitors car conditions 500 times per second for maximum comfort.
Depending on needs, the air suspension can lower or raise the car by 20mm or 40mm respectively for better aerodynamics or rough terrain handling. Extra insulation reduces wind and road noise further enhancing comfort.
Balanced Product Portfolio
The plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 remains popular alongside fully electric models like EX90. This balanced portfolio bridges towards full electrification while catering to current market demands where premium electric markets are still developing.
Plug-in hybrids are crucial for sales growth plans over coming years. They provide a strong bridge to a fully electrified future while maintaining profitability in key markets where full electrification is still emerging.
Exterior Design
A contemporary exterior design reinforces the XC90’s confident look reflecting Volvo's transition towards full electrification echoing elements from their newest electric cars. This design update aligns with Volvo's ongoing commitment to sustainability.
The XC90 can be specified with one of the best-sounding audio systems in a car – Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system that replicates acoustics of various venues like stages or concert halls.
Mild-Hybrid Options
For those preferring mild-hybrid options, two petrol variants B5 and B6 are available assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery reducing emissions up to 15% in real-world driving conditions.
The new Volvo XC90 is available for order starting today with production beginning late 2024 aiming for first deliveries by year-end.
Volvo Cars recorded SEK 25.6 billion core operating profit in 2023 with revenue reaching SEK 399.3 billion from global sales of 708,716 cars marking an all-time high performance year.
