Volvo's New Electric Flagship EX90 SUV Rolls Out To First Customers
The fully electric Volvo EX90 is now available, with the first batch of this flagship SUV being shipped to retailers in the United States and Europe. Customers will receive their cars before the end of this month. Deliveries will expand to more markets between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2025.
Production of the EX90 began earlier this year at our plant near Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The facility can produce up to 150,000 cars annually. Recent investments have upgraded the body shop, paint shop, and added a state-of-the-art battery pack production line, preparing it for this new era.
The EX90 sets new standards for Volvo in safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology. It aims to make life easier and more enjoyable. When testing this new flagship, high demands were placed on it. Chief Executive Jim Rowan has driven the EX90 across various states in the US, covering 950 kilometres.
"Based on this trip, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made," says Jim Rowan. "After driving it for 950 kilometres through three states in the US in various driving conditions and road surfaces, I only have positive memories. The charging, the handling, the ride comfort, the silence of the cabin and the epic sound system, the reliability, the tech and the feel of the UI – I’ve never driven a Volvo car like it. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, and it begins now."
The EX90 represents a significant shift as it is powered by a core system built on NVIDIA DRIVE® platform. This system integrates with Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform and Volvo's in-house software to manage key functions like safety and infotainment seamlessly.
Born smart and connected with Google built-in, it features sensors including radars, cameras, and lidar from Luminar for enhanced safety. Data from these sensors combined with an always-on 5G connection allows continuous improvements via over-the-air updates.
Global Media Test Drive
Recently, hundreds of journalists experienced all qualities of the EX90 during a global media test drive southeast of Los Angeles. This event showcased its capabilities firsthand to a global audience.
"The Volvo EX90 embodies our future as a fully electric car maker," says Jim Rowan. "It’s a testament to our global engineering capabilities and reaffirms our position as a leader in the ongoing technology shift in the car industry."
Sustainability Commitment
The EX90 is designed to be fully electric with a range of up to 600km*. It includes next-generation passive and active safety technology informed by advanced sensors. It also offers bi-directional charging to support renewable energy use.
Volvo Cars aims to become fully electric by 2040 while reducing its carbon footprint significantly. As part of this commitment, they recorded a core operating profit of SEK 25.6 billion in 2023 with revenues reaching SEK 399.3 billion.
