Volvo Cars Starts Production Of Fully Electric EX90 SUV

Volvo Cars has commenced production of its new electric flagship SUV, the EX90, at its factory near Charleston, South Carolina. The first customer deliveries are expected in the second half of this year. The EX90 is the first Volvo car powered by core computing technology, marking a significant shift for the company.

The initial EX90 model, painted in Denim Blue, is set to be delivered to a customer in the United States later this year. "The fully electric Volvo EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars – a new era for safety, sustainability and human-centric technology," stated Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars.

Volvo Cars' first manufacturing plant in the United States opened in 2018 just outside Charleston. Currently, the Charleston plant produces both the EX90 and the S60 sedan, with a capacity to build up to 150,000 cars annually. Recent investments have enhanced the body shop and paint shop and added a state-of-the-art battery pack production line.

These upgrades reflect Volvo Cars' long-term commitment to South Carolina and the broader US market. The company has operated in the United States for nearly 70 years and maintains a network of 281 dealerships across 47 states.

Born Electric

The EX90 is based on Volvo's next-generation electric vehicle technology, offering a range of up to 300 miles. Designed to be the safest Volvo car to date, it features advanced passive and active safety technology supported by a suite of sensors. The seven-seater configuration provides ample space, versatility, and comfort for families.

The EX90 is equipped with a powerful core system that remains connected and can be updated over time through software updates. These updates are facilitated by AI and real-time data collection, showcasing Volvo's engineering capabilities and leadership in automotive technology.
